'Star Wars 9' Trailer Easter Egg May Reveal Rey's Role in the Movie

"It's like poetry... It rhymes."

There’s a symmetry to the Star Wars movies that’s hard to miss. From major plot beats across the trilogies to the combat choreography in a single film, the Skywalker Saga just seems to rhyme. So it’s not surprise that the first trailer for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker has its own parallels with the previous movies, but one recently discovered Easter egg may hint at a bigger clue from the next Star Wars movie.

Remember in the Rise of Skywalker trailer when Rey faces down Kylo Ren in his TIE Silencer? (Of course you do, it was awesome.) Well, much of what Rey does in that scene matches up perfectly with Kylo’s fight against Luke Skywalker at the end of The Last Jedi. The similarities were spotted (or at least, reshared) by the Instagram account @reyawakened on Tuesday with the title, “Star Wars is like poetry. It rhymes.”

You can watch it for yourself right here:

Beyond the pure joy of visual symmetry, it’s interesting to see The Rise of Skywalker referencing this pivotal scene from the previous movie in the first scene of the first trailer for Episode IX. We know that Rey is facing down Kylo in that moment, so does that mean that he’ll will take on a role similar to the dynamic between Luke and Kylo in the previous film?

Perhaps, director J.J. Abrams is trying to hint that much like Kylo faced down his old Jedi Master, Luke, in The Last Jedi, Rey will need to take on a great Sith in The Rise of Skywalker. And who else could that be but Emperor Palpatine? We know Sheev is coming back in some capacity, but how? If this Easter egg means anything, he could be a powerful Force projection just like Luke in Episode VIII.

Then again, maybe we’re reading too far into this. Just because Star Wars is poetry doesn’t mean there’s always a deeper meaning. Sometimes it’s just visual symmetry for the sake of visual symmetry, and that’s cool too.

At the very least, revisiting this scene from The Last Jedi reminded me that Luke’s final words to Kylo were, “See ya around kid.” Two years later, with the knowledge that Luke will return as a Force ghost in Episode IX, those words seem more relevant than ever.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes to theaters on December 20.
