'Stranger Things' Season 4 trailer leaves Hawkins for the Upside Down

Pack your bags, 'Stranger Things' is getting out of Hawkins.

Surprise! A teaser trailer for Season 4 of Stranger Things just released, and it’s teasing a full-blown return to the Upside Down. As the trailer hints, “We’re not in Hawkins anymore.” It seems that darkness is about to swallow up the entire Indiana town whole.

On Monday at noon time Eastern, Netflix released a teaser for the fourth season of Stranger Things. A release date was not revealed.

In the trailer, a “Stranger Things 4” logo appears before flashing to a forest in the Upside Down. A sign to the right says “Welcome to Hawkins.” To the left, a clock, likely the nuclear doomsday clock, shows both hands near midnight covered by branches inside of a tree. The logo, which buzzes neon, slowly powers down as the branches of the forest rise up and engulf the logo.

As the bell rings midnight we see the Season 4 tagline: “We’re Not in Hawkins Anymore.”

Is Stranger Things going The Wizard of Oz? Probably! Based on the little details we have, it seems Season 4 of the popular Netflix hit will see the full return to (and of) the Upside Down, the dark parallel dimension that our heroes have crossed into before. If “We’re Not in Hawkins Anymore” is to be taken literally, it appears the season could actually take place entirely in the Upside Down. But how, and why, that happens is obviously unclear.

It is also no coincidence that, officially today, Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers inked a new deal with Netflix to not only develop a fourth season but produce new shows and movies for the service.

“We are absolutely thrilled to continue our relationship with Netflix,” the Duffers said in a statement, via Variety. “From our first pitch meeting to the release of Stranger Things 3, the entire team at Netflix has been nothing short of sensational, providing us with the kind of support, guidance, and creative freedom we always dreamed about. We can’t wait to tell many more stories together — beginning, of course, with a return trip to Hawkins!”

Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, also teased new projects in the works by the Duffers that aren’t Stranger Things-centric. “The Duffer Brothers have captivated viewers around the world with Stranger Things and we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with them to bring their vivid imaginations to other film and series projects our members will love,” Sarandos said. “We can’t wait to see what The Duffer Brothers have in store when they step outside the world of The Upside Down.”

While the Duffers’ new projects have yet to be unveiled, there’s still a whole new season of Stranger Things to speculate over. Is Hawkins really doomed? Just how much of the Upside Down will we explore? Let the speculation begin.

Stranger Things Season 4 does not yet have a release date.
