'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers Might Be Revealed by Oreo's New Design

Here's what I learned about 'GoT', Oreos, and life.

Perhaps, HBO was protective of the Game of Thrones brand when the show first launched, but heading into the eighth and final season, there’s no cross-promotional opportunity too strange to consider. There’s an official Game of Thrones album featuring songs from hip hop and pop stars, and a Super Bowl Bud Light commercial featuring Game of Thrones actors and a CGI dragon. But best of all, there are Game of Thrones Oreos.

Officially released on April 8 as part of a special promotion, Inverse managed to score three boxes of Game of Thrones Oreos ahead of time. (That’s 90 limited edition chocolate sandwich cookies). The goal? Eat a bunch of cookies — and, you know, maybe unearth some Game of Thrones Season 8 spoilers hidden in Oreo’s special packaging.

Which house are you?

After some extensive snacking research, here are some key details about the Game of Thrones Oreos.

  • They come in four variations with special designs: the White Walkers, House Lannister, House Stark, House Targaryen.
  • Does this mean those are the only four contenders for the Iron Throne?
  • What about House Greyjoy?
  • Ok, yeah, it’s probably just those four.
  • You can also go to Oreo.com and pick your house.
  • The Oreo website’s Game of Thrones feature is not yet active, you should probably check back on April 8.
  • Did you know that a single serving of Oreos is just two cookies?

But perhaps most important, these Game of Thrones Oreos lack the physical integrity of the classic cookie. Applying almost any pressure causes the entire thing to crack and crumble. That’s probably because Nabisco had to swap out its usually perfect cookie-making technology for new GoT molds, but it still makes separating each chocolate cookie from its connective “creme” extra difficult.

This photo was taken right before the required dunk test. Spoiler: they passed.

Then again, maybe the company behind America’s favorite cookie is trying to tell us something — that no one leader or noble house is worthy of the throne. That all our figureheads are weak. Like Daenerys once said, it’s not enough to stop the cycle of war and bloodshed by replacing one cruel ruler with another. You have to “break the wheel.”

Then again, maybe it’s just a promotional cookie.

Update: On Tuesday, April 9, Inverse employees finished eating all 90 Oreos, but not before taking note of the final remaining cookie. The last cookie standing, if you will.

Not only was the final Oreo emblazoned with the House Targaryen sigil, but the cookie was broken in such a way that one of the dragon’s three heads had been removed.

This feels like a pretty strong omen that while Daenerys Targaryen will win the Game of Thrones, she’ll never get back the dragon the Night King stole from her. Still, if this Oreo is right, at least she won’t lose all three in the coming battle.

Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres April 14 on HBO.
