While you might not recognize the name A44 Games, you’ve likely heard of the studio’s first game, Ashen. The Soulslike title garnered multiple nominations when it was released in 2018, with a fascinating world and story to explore, all presented in a gorgeous cel-shaded style. Now, A44 Games is set to release its second game with Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, a title that by all regards looks even more ambitious than Ashen. Here’s everything we know about Flintlock.

When is the Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn release window?

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn was first announced in March 2022, alongside a cinematic reveal trailer. At the moment, the game doesn’t have a firm date, but it’s currently planned to release sometime in early 2023. Microsoft has already confirmed the game will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.

Players are constantly accompanied by a magical foxlike companion named Enki.

What are the Flintlock platforms?

While Flintlock was shown off during the Microsoft Showcase, it’s coming to almost every other modern platform as well. Currently, the game is planned to release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Is there a Flintlock trailer?

There are currently two trailers for Flintlock; the cinematic reveal trailer and a gameplay trailer shown off during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase. Even though both trailers are relatively short, they do give a good look at the world and weird creatures of Flintlock.

What do we know about the Flintlock story?

Flintlock is set in a brand new RPG setting, and based on the trailers so far it seems like the story will revolve around fighting a set of powerful gods. The gameplay trailer evidences this with the line, “When the gods first emerged from the great below, we saw them as saviors. Instead, they released a pestilence on our world.” In order to fight the gods, humanity has formed the Coalition Army.

The main character of Flintlock is a woman named Nor Vanek, who leads a group called the Blackstream Sappers. The game’s official website states “Nor fights on the side of the living to defeat the old gods and retake the City of Dawn.” She’s joined by an adorable fox-like creature named Enki, who uses his magical abilities to help Nor during combat. Past that, we don’t know a lot about the story of Flintlock, but here’s the official description from the game’s site for some additional context:

In Flintlock’s world the recent reappearance of the gods has brought about calamity.

“The Door to the Afterlife has been opened, allowing the old God’s army of the undead to escape from within. The living are on the brink of extinction. It’s time for the coalition army to retake their world. Embrace vengeance, gunpowder and magic and embark on an epic journey to lead mankind’s final siege against the tide of the dead.”

What is Flintlock gameplay like?

Flintlock is described as a “gunpowder and magic-fueled action RPG,” and that certainly looks to be the case based on the gameplay trailer. The third-person RPG puts a big emphasis on action, and it looks like Nor will be using a mix of melee weapons, guns, and magic. There’s even a shot that shows off a kind of blunderbuss grenade launcher, suggesting there will be even more tools or items to use. It also looks like the fox-like Enki will be accompanying you at all times, and will contribute in battle both on his own and when you command him to. The trailer also shows Enki being used for some traversal mechanics, as he teleports players through the air between some kind of glowing triangle signs.

Flintlock seems to have a wide array of weapons and magical abilities.

Outside of combat, you’ll be exploring the world and trying to reassemble the members of the Blackstream Sappers, who are all explosives and weaponry experts. Although we don’t know many details about them, Flintlock will also have a skill tree system to improve Nor and some kind of caravan system

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is currently in development for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
