What Happened To Jason? Crystal Lake's Sci-Fi Ending, Explained

Buckle up, this one gets weird.

Crystal Lake was supposed to make sense of Friday the 13th’s incredibly complicated lore. What began as the quintessential summer-camp slasher has morphed over the decades into a story about immortal zombies, cryogenics, and space travel. Peacock’s new streaming series was supposed to simply set up the twist of the very first movie — that Pamela Voorhees is the murderer — and establish how her deformed son Jason could have survived his initial drowning.

That mystery is solved by the end of the eight episodes, but in an incredibly convoluted way that turns this horror prequel into a full-on sci-fi thriller. Here’s how it shakes out, if you’re too squeamish to sit through all the gore.

Major spoilers for Crystal Lake Episodes 7 and 8 ahead.

Pamela Voorhees has led a complicated life.

In Crystal Lake Episode 7, “Friday...”, we finally flash back into Pam’s past and see what brought her to Crystal Lake in the first place. Back in the 1950s, she was a singer having a baby with a man named Elias Wittering (Hamish Linklater). After experiencing what seemed to be a pregnancy loss, Elias brings Pamala to his employer, the Bellflower Corporation.

The couple gets married and settles into a Bellflower company town while she goes through company-funded treatment, but Pam starts to get the sense that something isn’t quite right. When her neighbor in the same clinical trial gives birth to a stillborn baby and slits her own throat out of grief, it shocks Pam enough to send her into labor, but she has no memory of giving birth at all.

Jason is a difficult baby, only calming down when Pam bathes him. However, she falls asleep with the water still running, and Elias walks in to find Jason drowning. While Jason survives the ordeal, it’s used as a reason to put Pam on psychiatric medication and frame her as an unfit mother.

Years later, at Jason’s birthday party, Elias brings Jason back haggard after a trip to the clinic for his “treatment.” Jason finds a Geiger counter, and Pam realizes his hair is falling out, making her wonder if these treatments have something to do with radiation. When she confronts Elias, he tells her that no one will believe her. Pam then finds Jason’s art, revealing a scary yellow door and men in suits.

Jason was able to survive his initial drowning at Camp Crystal Lake thanks to his treatments.

On the night of the Bellflower gala, Elias makes a presentation on why Jason is the way he is: he’s the first successful product of Project Argonaut, an attempt to create a resilient human who could survive anything the Nuclear Age could throw at him, even a nuclear blast (or drowning). As Elias proudly says, trauma actually makes him stronger. Pam, horrified, finds Jason and escapes with the help of Elias’ secretary.

Back in 1971, Pamela finally sees Jason, now fully grown with a bag over his head. He murders Elias and then attacks Pam, but relents at the last second. A local shoots Jason, but since we learned that he’s basically impervious to damage, he survives.

“My son is strong, stronger than anyone gave him credit for,” a delirious Pam says. This sets us up for where Friday the 13th began: with Pamela Voorhees getting revenge for her son, knowing full well that Jason is still lurking in the woods. It’s a labyrinthine origin story for a horror icon, but at least moving the whole show forward in time makes sense now. Jason just had a massive growth spurt.
