Seven Years: Volkswagen Reveals It Cheated Emission Tests for 3.0 Engines, Too

Volkswagen officials admitted to the Environmental Protection Agency this week that three-liter engines in their cars had cheated emissions tests going back to 2009, not 2014, as company officials originally said.

As reported by USA Today:

“U.S. regulators said company officials acknowledged Thursday in a meeting that emissions violations the EPA had previously identified affected “all” Volkswagen and Audi U.S. vehicles with 3-liter diesel engines from the 20019 to 2016 model years.”

This could affect up to 11 million cars, 482,000 of which were sold in the United States.

The EPA has said since it filed a “notice of violation” back on September 18 that the defeat devices have been used since 2009.

Affected 2.0 diesel models include:

· Jetta (MY 2009 – 2015)

· Jetta Sportwagen (MY 2009-2014)

· Beetle (MY 2012 – 2015)

· Beetle Convertible (MY 2012-2015)

· Audi A3 (MY 2010 – 2015)

· Golf (MY 2010 – 2015)

· Golf Sportwagen (MY 2015)

· Passat (MY 2012-2015)

Affected 3.0 diesel models include:

Volkswagen Touareg (MY 2014)

Porsche Cayenne (MY 2015)

Audi A6 Quattro (MY 2016)

Audi A7 Quattro (MY 2016)

Audi A8 (MY 2016)

Audi A8L (MY 2016)

Audi Q5 (MY 2016)

The scandal centers on so-called “defeat devices” — software that circumvents EPA emissions standards for nitrogen oxides — that were installed in Volkswagens.
