'Rick and Morty' Season 4, Episode 2 preview: The best Jerry episode yet?

Remember Glootie?

The Rick and Morty Season 4 premiere executed a hard reset for the show after Rick died and visited all sorts of fascist alternate realities while Morty went all Akira trying to eventually die in Jessica’s arms. Things settled back to normal at the end of all that craziness, so what’s next for Adult Swim’s sci-fi series in Rick and Morty Episode 2?

Of all the upcoming episodes this season, we already know a surprising amount of information about Season 4, Episode 2 because we know for a fact that it’s the Glootie episode.

This story is shaping up to be perhaps the single greatest Jerry episode of all time, making Morty’s dad look like a total fool in an adventure involving that reminds us of “Something Ricked This Way Comes,” the late Season 1 episode when Morty and Jerry went to Pluto.

Plenty of information and footage from this episode was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 in July, and because we know this is the Glootie episode, we know that Jerry builds some kind of foolish app with help from an alien voiced by Taika Waititi.

Here’s all of that and everything else we know about Episode 2, including why it might become your new favorite Jerry episode of all time:

This has to be from the episode called "The Old Man and the Seat," right?

What’s Rick and Morty Season 4, Episode 2 called?

Adult Swim announced the first five Rick and Morty Season 4 episode titles in October, so we’ve known for awhile that Episode 2 is called “The Old Man and the Seat.” That leads us to assume that it’ll feature Rick’s hover chair from the Season 4 trailer.

What’s “The Old Man and the Seat” about?

The official episode description, also released in October, offers virtually no concrete information about Episode 2, which is somehow even more obtuse than usual for these obtuse summaries:

“We all have one thing in common broh. I don’t know broh. Watch this one.”

The more definitive hint comes from the official “On the next Rick and Morty…” teaser video released after Episode 1 aired:

Jerry develops an app with a pink alien despite a warning tattooed on the alien’s forehead that says “DO NOT DEVELOP MY APP.” They wind up aboard some kind of mothership that jumps into Earth’s orbit, where an intern refuses to take this app down.

Many Rick and Morty fans should instantly recognize Glootie, the chubby pink alien with the forehead tattoo — voiced by Thor: Ragnarok writer-director Taika Waititi — that made his debut in a video released during SDCC 2019:

The SDCC clip essentially takes place in between the two main scenes from the Episode 2 teaser, but here’s the story as told through these scenes:

After Morty realizes that Jerry developed some kind of app with Glootie, they try to convince him to take it down. Glootie says he can’t on account of being just an intern, which causes Morty to go berserk, smashing all the monitors. This bit is also featured briefly in the Season 4 trailer, as is another scene from this episode where Morty and Jerry (in his branded track suit) fall into a crowded room full of armored soldiers of this same species.

They can only take the app down if they access the server on the mothership, which is where the second half of the Episode 2 teaser comes in.

Rick is the one who tattooed this poor alien.

What else do we know about Rick and Morty Season 4, Episode 2?

In the official Rick and Morty #52 comic, it’s revealed that that Rick is the the one who tattooed “DO NOT DEVELOP MY APP” on Glootie’s forehead, something the show’s co-creator Justin Roiland also talked about during an interview at SDCC. Jerry and Morty knew ahead of time that they shouldn’t help Glootie develop any apps, yet they get sucked into a chaotic adventure because Jerry is so naive.

This explains why Morty takes that warning so seriously and freaks out upon learning that Jerry ignored it. What’s this app idea anyway?

In the SDCC footage, when Morty and Jerry dive out of the room, we can see a white board with “Jerry’s Ideas” written on them. The idea labeled “BEST” is “Lovefinderrz,” and given the logo on their matching blue-green tracks suits looks like a pair of hands forming a heart with another heart drawn around it, it seems like the app is some kind of dating app. (The logo is also shown on the teleportation pad in the mothership, so it could be a symbol for their entire species.)

If the A-plot involves a Jerry-Morty adventure, then where’s Rick? The last time this happened in “Something Ricked This Way Comes,” Rick spent a lot of time with Summer and faced the Devil, so Rick will either be on his own — like in the first two promo images for Season 4 — or he’ll be off spending time with his daughter and/or granddaughter.

Is this what Rick is up to in 'Rick and Morty' Season 4, Episode 2?

Does anyone else guest star in Rick and Morty Season 4, Episode 2?

We’re glad you asked: In a July interview, show creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland confirmed that Sam Neill would also lend his voice to this episode — or at the very least that he’ll voice the same kind of alien at some point in Season 4.

“He’s from the same species as Taika’s character, and we wanted a Kiwi flavor to their species,” Roiland said of Neill’s role, but he didn’t elaborate on who Neill voices.

Could he be the leader of their entire race? Another intern? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Rick and Morty Season 4 airs on Adult Swim Sunday nights at 11:30 p.m. Eastern.
