'Rick and Morty' Season 4 Release Date May Solve a Mystery From the Intro

Co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland teased a big reveal at the show's Comic-Con panel.

SAN DIEGO — For a show full of questions that will likely never be solved, one of Rick and Morty’s original mysteries may finally have an answer in Season 4. Speaking to a packed crowd at San Diego Comic-Con, series co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon revealed plans to solve a mystery that has lingered since the opening credits played on the very first episode of Rick and Morty.

At a panel on Friday afternoon attended by Inverse, which also featured the Adult Swim show’s cast (Sarah Chalk, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer), the team behind one of the most popular TV shows in the multiverse fielded questions from the audience and even showed off some exclusive new footage. While most of the details revealed were already covered in previous interviews, one fan question touched on an interesting new topic: that Cthulhu-style monster in the Rick and Morty opening credits (watch it up top).

When asked if we’d ever find out what happens in an unresolved sequence that features Rick, Morty, and Summer fleeing from the beast in a spaceship, Roiland replied, “We have a part two that we may put in the credits.”

As Rick and Morty fans know, the opening theme for each season features a handful of clips that appear to come from through the series. But only some of them are real, the others are invented exclusively for the intro. Then fun, as Roiland and Harmon put it, is that you have to wait until the end of the season to find out which is which.

However, in the case of that Cthulu creature, we may finally get an answer. If Rick and Morty Season 4 features a continuation of that chase scene it could introduce a new sort of storytelling into the series, one that plays out over many years in short sequences hidden in the credits.

After a long hiatus, Rick and Morty Season 4 is set to return this November with 10 new episodes. The showrunners previously confirmed that the new season will feature the return of fan-favorite character Mr. Meeseeks. At Comic-Con, Harmon and Roiland also reaffirmed that thanks to their new 70-episode contract, fans will never have to wait this long for new episodes again, adding that they’re already well into the writing process for Season 5.

But after waiting this long, we’re just excited for Rick and Morty to return with Season 4, and some closure on that Cthuluhu chase would be an extra sweet bonus.

Rick and Morty Season 4 debuts this November on Adult Swim.
