'Rick and Morty' Season 4 SDCC Trailer: Laugh at Jerry's Next Big Failure

A hilarious reminder of how terrible Jerry is at everything he does.

The first clip from Rick and Morty Season 4 is here, and it’s launch day for Jerry’s next failed business venture: Some kind of dating app.

Not only does the clip introduce a new alien voiced by Taika Waititi, but it offers us a glimpse at a brand-new Jerry and Morty adventure. As such, we’re getting some “Something Ricked This Way Comes” vibes mixed with “M. Night Shaym-Aliens!”, and this untitled Season 4 episode already looks better than both of those stories combined.

The San Diego Comic-Con 2019 exclusive clip aired during a Friday Rick and Morty panel at the Indigo Ballroom. In the scene, Jerry Smith (Chris Parnell) has a failing app startup, and requests that a plump four-eyed alien named Glootie “take the app down.” Glootie resists, claiming he’s “just an intern.”

That’s when Morty (voiced by series co-creator Justin Roiland) goes berserk and smashes three computer monitors with a tennis racquet. He threatens poor Glootie, who tries to escape after mentioning that the app can only be taken down via the server on the mothership.

What the hell is going on here? We can draw a few conclusions.

Jerry and Morty dive out of the room, expecting an explosion, and we get a peak at Jerry's whiteboard.

For starters, Morty’s starting to take after his grandfather more and more, immediately resorting to violence and insults. We’ve seen this before, but it usually takes a lot to get Morty angry. Was Glootie annoying Morty all day long? (At least Morty still struggles to comprehend what a “server” is and bumbles through his words. Classic Morty.)

Later, Jerry and his intern Glootie are wearing matching green track suits with a logo that looks like a pair of hands forming a heart, with another heart drawn around it. The only thing that could be more dumb is an ad for apples that just said, “Hungry for apples?”

When Glootie’s phone starts beeping ominously, Jerry and Morty dive out of the room, expecting a bomb. That’s where we can see “Jerry’s Ideas” on the whiteboard that include one that’s labeled “Best”: Lovefinderrz.

Jerry’s been unemployed on Rick and Morty, yet here he somehow works with an alien race to develop a dating app. Won’t Jerry be competing with the same intergalactic app that he used in “The ABC’s of Beth” to match up with Keara? Again, what a dumb idea from Jerry that’s a lot of fun for us to watch.

Meanwhile, what’s the deal with Glootie? That’s unmistakably a Kiwi accent, and it was confirmed during the panel that Glootie is voiced by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, who uses a similar voice for Korg who was last seen in Avengers: Endgame.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview published Wednesday, Rick and Morty co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon talked at length about the new season, confirming rumors that Sam Neill will voice a character while also dropping the surprise announcement that Waititi would lend his voice as well.

When asked if Neill’s character would riff on his roles from Event Horizon or Jurassic Park, Roiland said the two would appear in the same episode as members of the same species. “He’s from the same species as Taika’s character, and we wanted a Kiwi flavor to their species,” Roiland said. We don’t see Neill’s character anywhere in this scene, but he must also play a four-eyed alien that looks like a misshapen balloon stuffed full of mashed potatoes.

One thing’s for sure: We can’t wait to see how Jerry messes this one up when the new Rick and Morty season premieres this fall.

Rick and Morty Season 4 premieres sometime in November 2019.
