The Tesla Model Y is here, and it looks set to stun. At the company’s grand unveiling Thursday, CEO Elon Musk demonstrated the compact SUV that’s set to help Tesla further reach a mass market with a broader range of vehicles.
“It has the functionality of an SUV but will ride like a sports car,” Musk told the audience at the Tesla Design Studio in Hawthorne, California. “We expect it will be the safest mid-size SUV in the world by far.”
The Model Y is set to ship in four variants, which rank around 10 percent more expensive than their Model 3 sedan equivalents.
- A Standard Range variant with 230 miles of range, a 120 mph top speed, 0 to 60 mph acceleration times of 5.9 seconds, and a price of $39,000. Deliveries are expected to start in spring 2021.
- A Long Range variant with 300 miles of range, a 130 mph top speed, 0 to 60 mph acceleration times of 5.5 seconds, and a price of $47,000. Deliveries are expected to start in fall 2020.
- A Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive variant with 280 miles of range, a 135 mph top speed, 0 to 60 mph acceleration times of 4.8 seconds, and a price of $51,000. Deliveries are expected to start in fall 2020.
- A Performance variant with 280 miles of range, a 150 mph top speed, 0 to 60 mph acceleration times of 3.5 seconds, and a price of $60,000. Deliveries are expected to start in fall 2020.
Following the presentation, Musk gave attendees some time to go hands-on with the vehicle and released some professionally made materials. The resultant media gives an impression of how this vehicle will shape up in reality.
