'Rick and Morty' Season 4 Almost Had a 'Star Wars Resistance' Voice Actor

Could Morty get his first real friend?

In an alternate reality, Rick and Morty Season 4 shares a voice actor with Star Wars Resistance and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but in our reality, actor Josh Brener didn’t get the part he auditioned for.

“I did audition for a role on the new season of Rick and Morty,” Brener tells Inverse. “But I don’t think I got it because I never heard back.”

We spoke with Brener about his live-action role in What Men Want and about voicing the alien Neeku Vozo in Star Wars Resistance, but Brener also offered some brief information about his potential role in Rick and Morty Season 4. “I am a huge fan of Rick and Morty,” Brener said. “I love that show so much.”

When pressed for more information, Brener couldn’t reveal much. “It was for a high school kid … is the most I’ll say,” he said. When asked outright if it was a classmate of Summer or Morty, Brener said, “Something like that.”

Did Brener almost voice one of these characters?

Adult Swim

Adult Swim casting a “high school kid” hardly feels like a Season 4 spoiler by any means, but it still offers a Season 4 clue when there’s been such a dearth of news.

Brener would probably have played a new character that attends Harry Herpson High School with Summer and Morty. A smattering of their classmates have appeared previously on Rick and Morty, notably when the Smith children host parties like in “Ricksy Business” or “Big Trouble in Little Sanchez.” Summer’s longtime boyfriend, Ethan, and Morty’s crush, Jessica, are the two most notable examples, but if Rick and Morty is casting a well-known actor to play a new high schooler, then it implies they’ll have a larger one-off role to play than simply “classmate.”

One possibility is that the character might be Summer’s age, and maybe even a love interest. Summer did break up with Ethan in Season 3’s “The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy”, so she might find a new boyfriend in Season 4. Joel McHale voiced Hemorrhage, another love interest to Summer, early in Season 3, so there’s a precedent for something like this. If this is indeed the case, then much like with Hemorrhage, it’d probably just be a one-off guest role tied directly into the plot.

Even if the character isn’t voiced by Josh Brener, chances are it’ll be for a single episode, so there has to be an explanation for their exit in a timely fashion.

The closest Morty came to having friends was when he lost the "toxic" parts of his personality in "Rest and Ricklaxation."

Adult Swim

Is the character an alien in disguise or some other supernatural being? Are they simply a transfer student that dies by the end of the story? Rick and Morty seldom has guest stars play recurring characters, with the only exception being Keith David as the President of the United States.

Morty doesn’t really have any friends his own age, with the only slight exception being his longtime crush on Jessica. It’s at least possible that whoever assumes the role Brener auditioned for might be Morty’s first-ever friend that’s not a dog, a fart, or his grandpa.

But all of this is pure speculation. What do we actually know here? Brener auditioning for a role as a male high school student probably means Rick and Morty Season 4 will return to Harry Herpson High School, and outside of that, the new season remains a total mystery.

Rick and Morty Season 4 might begin by the end of 2019, but there’s no official word yet.
