'Luke Cage' Season 2 Trailer: Mariah Hires Luke Cage to Fight Bushmaster

The Marvel/Netflix series Luke Cage might be named after Mike Colter’s bulletproof vigilante, but Mariah Dillard may be the true hero of Harlem. Or, maybe not. In the final trailer for Marvel’s Luke Cage Season 2, which begins streaming on June 22, Alfre Woodard’s ambitious ex-politician rises and falls against the show’s new villain, Bushmaster.

On Tuesday, Netflix released the trailer for Luke Cage Season 2, which has less Luke and more Mariah Dillard and her stewardship over Harlem’s Paradise, the club formerly owned by her brother Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali). In Season 2, Mariah navigates the murky waters of the criminal underworld while fending off Bushmaster (Mustafa Shakir), a new villain who uses special herbs to obtain superpowers. With Bushmaster closing in, Mariah turns to Luke Cage for help.

“Harlem doesn’t need a hero,” Mariah tells herself. “It needs a Queen.”

While recruiting Luke Cage is a strategic chess play for Mariah, for Marvel fans, it’s an old school showdown as Cage and Bushmaster trade blows like this generation’s Ali and Frazier. In the trailer, Bushmaster more than proves he’s a match for the steel Defender. It’s a really, really good thing this guy wasn’t around when the Hand was trying to destroy New York.

'Luke Cage' Season 2 is not messing around.

Netflix

As Mariah hires Luke Cage to fight Bushmaster, is Luke Cage Season 2 inching its way towards a full-blown Heroes for Hire spin-off? Hopefully not before there’s a Daughters of the Dragon series with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, but either way, the Marvel/Netflix universe has no shortage of ass-kicking.

Marvel’s Luke Cage Season 2 will begin streaming on Netflix on June 22.
