'Justice League' Star Offers Touching Tribute to the Film's Greatest Hero

Warner Bros.

Being a great hero is all about sacrifice, and no hero made a greater sacrifice than Superman actor Henry Cavill’s mustache sometime after Justice League wrapped up filming. Because Cavill shaved it right off his chiseled face.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Henry Cavill shared a touching tribute video on Instagram dedicated to his dearly departed mustache. #ShavedButNotForgotten indeed.

Among its many faults, the Justice League movie had some pretty bad CGI not only when it came to the boring villain Steppenwolf but also in the digital removal of Cavill’s mustache, making Superman look bizarre in some scenes.

You see, not only did Cavill have to maintain a stiff upper lip for his uber-serious depiction of Superman, but the actor had to maintain a mustache while also filming a role in Mission Impossible — Fallout. So amidst trying — and failing — to hide Superman’s resurrection in the movie, Warner Bros. also had to somehow remove the mustache in editing.

Remember how thick his facial hair was in 'Man of Steel'?

Yes, this evolved into a whole “thing,” especially when it came to scheduling Justice League reshoots. Some outlets dubbed this drama “Mustachegate” with Cavill himself referring to it as “this moustache fiasco.”

But that’s all Kryptonian resurrection water under the bridge now, because Superman is alive and the mustache is dead. Henry Cavill, it would seem, is pretty sad about it, or at the very least has a great sense of humor about the whole thing, because his Instagram tribute video is a delight, especially when Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You” plays over a wistful montage. Check it out:

“I know, it’s hard to recognize me without KingStache,” Cavill says in the video, referring to the name he gave the mustache after it gained sentience and posted a Mission Impossible — Fallout trailer via Instagram.

Back in October, Cavill’s co-star Ben Affleck, who plays Batman, described the infamous piece of facial hair as “a full-on porn-star moustache,” adding that Cavill, “looked like a porn star from the ’70s, just with a better body.”

All along, Cavill has had a great sense of humor about the whole thing:

At its worst, KingStache sort of helped ruin Justice League, but at its absolute best, the brave mustache served as the fuzzy butt end of plenty of hilarious jokes for pogonotrophy enthusiasts everywhere.
