Apple Makes its iPhone 8 Event Time and Place Official

It's happening.

Apple announced on Thursday plans to hold an event on September 12, where rumors suggests the company will unveil the iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus and iPhone 8. The latter device has been the source of intense speculation, and it’s expected to be one of the most dramatic redesigns of the iPhone since its launch.

The event, set to start at 10 a.m. Pacific, will be the first event held at the Steve Jobs Theater, which forms part of Apple’s new spaceship-shaped campus. The event invite makes reference to this, with the tagline: “Let’s meet at our place.”

Taking place 10 years after the original iPhone was first released, Apple is expected to unveil a major redesign of the iPhone at the event. The new device is rumored to feature a 5.8-inch OLED screen in a phone the same size as the 4.7-inch iPhone 7. A face recognition scanner will replace the fingerprint scanner, and a virtual home button means the screen can extend to the far corners of the device.

Internally, the iPhone 8 is expected to pack a larger battery, providing longer battery life, as well as a new wireless charging system. This may not be ready at launch, however, with some reports suggesting Apple will enable the feature in a future software update. As with every update that came before it, the device is also expected to include a faster processor.

Attendees will be among the first to see Apple’s new campus. The project is one of the last that Steve Jobs worked on before his death in 2011. It’s centered around a ring-shaped building in the center, a four-story, 2.8-million square foot construction that’s cost the company a staggering $5 billion. The project has been the source of several drone footage videos as Apple fans take a closer look at the development.

“It’s a pretty amazing building. Looks a little like a spaceship landed.” Jobs told Cupertino City Council in 2011. “It’s a circle! And so it’s curved all the way around. As you know, if you build things, this is not the cheapest way to build something. There is not a straight piece of glass in the building. It’s all curved.”
