The Badass Greyjoy You'll Never See on 'Game of Thrones' Is Nuts

'Game of Thrones'

Euron might be a formidable beast in Game of Thrones Season 7, but there’s another Greyjoy brother in the books that you’ll never see on the show, and he’s probably even more of a badass. He’s so badass, in fact, that he’s invading the official A Song of Ice and Fire calendar.

Victarion Greyjoy is one of many characters from the Game of Thrones novels by George R.R. Martin that hasn’t appeared in the TV adaptation. The HBO show’s version of Euron Greyjoy represents something of an amalgamation of both characters, but a page from the 2018 A Song of Ice and Fire official calendar by illustrator Eric Velhagen pays homage to Euron and Balon’s youngest brother.

George R.R. Martin himself teased the official 2018 calendar via Twitter Thursday. One piece of art also features a confrontation between Daenerys and a Dothraki warlord, presumably her scene at the very end of Season 5 when she’s abandoned by her dragon in a field. There’s also an illustration of what looks like Arya’ wielding needle. But the drawing of Victarion Greyjoy looks like the kind of insane seafaring warrior that would kill dragons for fun.

In the books, Victarion is Lord Captain of the Iron Fleet. A brutish and fearsome warrior, Victarion wears full plate armor when he’s at sea and wields a huge, wicked axe (not unlike the weapons fans of the show saw Euron wielding in Season 7’s third episode). You don’t often see warriors sailing the seas in full armor, mainly because the heavy metal plates would make anyone sink like a rock if they fell overboard. Victarion is confident enough in his battle prowess not to worry, and besides, for a true Ironborn, there’s no greater glory than death by drowning in the midst of battle. Also, Martin himself once called Victarion “dumb as a stump.” So, he’s heavy on brawns, not so much on brains.

Here’s a closer look at that illustration of Victarion:

The 2018 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar includes 13 paintings and a bonus poster, teasing the following:

“From the rough seas of the Iron Islands and the blinding snows of the North to the fiery rebirth of the Mother of Dragons, Velhagen’s moody, textured artwork will remind fans that the most original series in fantasy is just warming up.”

Game of Thrones Season 7 airs on HBO Sundays at 9 p.m. Eastern.
