A Popular 'Rick and Morty' Plot Won't Return in Season 3

Yet another surprise for the new season of 'Rick and Morty.'

'Rick and Morty'

Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty loves its bizarre plot devices, and it’s obsessed with the multiverse and its many dimensions. There are no episodes more brazenly insane than when Rick rigs up an interdimensional cable box for the family to watch the often disturbing television programming from other dimensions. Unfortunately, it looks like the popular “Interdimensional Cable” episode format won’t return in Season 3.

The news comes via an interview with Time published yesterday, in which co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland spoke about the scope of the upcoming season, confirming that Interdimensional Cable won’t return in any Season 3 episodes. Harmon did, however, tease a somewhat similar format for some point during this season:

“The bad news is we didn’t get to make one of those this season. The good news is we tried a different take on a somewhat anthological episode.”

Interdimensional Cable began back in Season 1 with “Rixty Minutes,” in which Rick hijacks the family cable box as he bemoans the state of regular television.

Jerry and Beth dominate the episode after they become obsessed with watching wildly successful versions of themselves in alternate realities via VR headsets. In these lives, they aren’t even married, and their children were never born, ultimately making Beth and Jerry seem better off without each other.

Meanwhile, Rick and Morty watch regular interdimensional cable on the family TV, which includes some of the most fucked-up scenes to ever be featured on Rick and Morty. There’s a Lucky Charms knock-off where children disembowel a leprechaun, a world where hamsters live in people’s butts, and also Ants in My Eyes Johnson, an enthusiastic salesman in utter agony every moment of his existence because of, well, the ants in his eyes:

The follow-up to Interdimensional Cable came exactly a season later (Episode 8 of each season features the bit) with “Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate.” Jerry gets infected by a mutated alien bacteria that Rick was keeping in a pint of ice cream. The family takes him to an alien hospital for treatment where doctors try to convince Jerry to donate his penis as a heart for the galactic equivalent of Space Gandhi, voiced by Werner Herzog.

To pass the time, Rick installs the same intergalactic hook-up on the cable box in the hospital, and the family is treated with more disturbing ads and programs, like the one for the plumbus, an essential household item with a function none of us will ever be able to comprehend.

With no “Interdimensional Cable 3,” Season 3 will instead have a different version of what Harmon and Roiland call a “somewhat anthological episode.”

What might that entail, and will it also come right at Episode 8? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Rick and Morty Season 3 continues July 30 at 11:30 p.m. Eastern.
