A Thorough, Complete 'Rick and Morty' Season 3 Trailer Breakdown

'Rick and Morty' goes 'Mad Max,' 'The Avengers,' and Pickle in the Season 3 trailer.

'Rick and Morty'

The third season of Rick and Morty is shaping up to get you riggity riggity wrecked, son.

Last night, during a live stream Rick and Morty event following a marathon of the entire series thus far, creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland delivered a release date for the next Season 3 episode — July 30, 2017 — and an epic trailer for new season.

In it, there’s a wide-ranging mix of elements that we did and didn’t know about. There’s plenty of Pickle Rick from a survivalist-type episode that’s been likened to 127 Hours, which was originally teased right after the Season 3 premiere on April 1. Largely featured is a Mad Max rip-off including Summer that’s sure to be a delight.

Omitting all of the scenes from the already-released Season 3 premiere, “The Rickshank Redemption,” here’s a full breakdown of what we saw in the Rick and Morty Season 3 trailer:

"I'm Pickle Riiiiiick!"

'Rick and Morty'

The trailer opens with an extended version of the Pickle Rick reveal that Adult Swim teased back in April. It seems unlikely that this will be in Episode 2 and will show Pickle Rick having to survive in the sewer mere feet from the house.

“Are you in invisible and you’re gonna, like, fart on me?” Morty — who we can’t help but notice is wearing a nice sweater — nervously asks before seeing his pickled grandpa.

Rick flies what actually looks like Jerry to some domed city.

'Rick and Morty'

The first non-pickle shot is of Rick flying over a dense alien forest to a domed city on a plateau. It looks like Jerry, or someone, is sitting shotgun, because the figure is roughly Rick’s height, whereas Morty’s head falls a bit shorter).

'Mad Rick: Fury Road' or 'Mad Max: Fury Rick'?

'Rick and Morty'

Call it a homage or pastiche or even the more accurate “total ripoff,” but Rick and Morty Season 3 will have its own version of Mad Max: Fury Road in which Rick apparently steals some kind of glowing green crystal from a bunch of sand raiders.

How the heck does Morty get a Hulk arm with a mind of its own?

'Rick and Morty'

In a setting with a bizarrely Medieval aesthetic almost like Purge World (is this Dracula’s castle or something?), Morty gets a Hulked-out left arm that has a mind of its own, strangling one of the poor locals in the bath. Meanwhile, Rick raids some potions in beakers, hopefully looking for a way to cure Morty.

Rick and Morty make nice with the 'Mad Max' locals ... who are 100% cannibals.

'Rick and Morty'

In Mad Max world, Rick and Morty seemingly make nice with the locals and share a meal. Note the humanoid arm roasting over the fire.

Pickle Rick's trash mecha armor makes him a veritable badass.

'Rick and Morty'

Pickle Rick will get trapped in the sewers mere feet from the Smith residence and build himself a suit out of trash and rat body parts to escape — we know as much from the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive clip. The trailer features a triumphant shot of Rick’s escape as he blasts out of a toilet, but it’s not the Smith family house. So where is he?

Um, what?

'Rick and Morty'

It’s hard to imagine what the heck is going on in this clip, but if we had to guess, Rick and Morty are tied up inside some kind of gigantic piano that’s presumably controlled by the creepy-looking figure in the background. It stands to reason that when Monster Beethoven plays the corresponding keys, the wooden blocks strike down to crush the skulls of the prisoners.

Rick spends some quality time with Jerry for some reason.

'Rick and Morty'

Despite Beth and Jerry’s divorce in the season premiere, Rick and Jerry will seemingly get some quality time riding a roller coaster. Is this the place that was featured inside the massive domed plateau? It seems like there are similar-looking pink trees in the background.

Why is Cyborg Summer stalking Rick? And why is Rick chatting with a Gromflomite?

'Rick and Morty'

Summer teams up with a tough-looking Cyborg Summer. It doesn’t appear to be the Feral Summer from the Cronenberg world, so who knows what’s up.

Morty vs. Radioactive Morty?

'Rick and Morty'

A couple scenes in the trailer hint at what looks like some kind green, gooey, doppelganger battle. Here, a possibly Radioactive Morty fights with regular Morty. They crash Rick’s ship into the house.

Pickle Rick kicks ass.

'Rick and Morty'

This scene is straight out of the 2016 Comic-Con exclusive — although here it’s finished, instead of just being an animatic. We see Pickle Rick deploy a creepy techno-organic mecha suit of sorts that allows him to fight rabid rats.

And here's the 'Rick and Morty' take on the Avengers.

'Rick and Morty'

Season 3 will feature a colorful team of weirdo superheroes meant to mock the Avengers and they’ll fight some massively nasty hellish gladiator that … hangs from the ceiling?

Summer's getting more badass in Season 3.

'Rick and Morty'

The grotesquely-maimed Mad Max-style road warrior pleads for Summer to kill him, to which she replies, “Okay, but not because you told me to.” Rick and Morty are shocked to see this, and Rick confirms, “…getting darker” which is a follow up on his season premiere promise that this would be the darkest season of their adventures.

Morty is very excited to join the Vindicators.

'Rick and Morty'

“We’re being called to assemble by the Vindicators!” Morty excitedly says to Rick, pointing at a glowing purple crystal in the garage. Rick refuses to “answer a literal call to adventure!” Based on the color of the crystal and the female Vision knock-off featured in the previous clip, we’re willing to bet that that group of heroes is the Vindicators.

Morty and Beth mess around with a MORPHIZER-XE.

'Rick and Morty'

Rick’s nowhere to be seen when Morty and Beth mess around with a device called the MORPHIZER-XE. It’s unclear what they were trying to do, but it turns Summer into a veritable giant, destroying the garage in the process. Their neighbor Gene checks in moments later: “Everything okay here?” to which Morty shouts, “Mind your own goddamned business Gene!”

Rick also gets his own Radioactive Rick to deal with.

'Rick and Morty'

Much like Morty, Rick will have a radioactive version of himself to square off against.

Jerry and Rick are totally having some fun.

'Rick and Morty'

There’s a bit more of Rick and Jerry riding a roller coaster. Weirdly enough, Rick has a very noticeable hole in his shirt that looks a bit bloody, almost like an Iron Man-type injury. Maybe it messes with Rick’s head, which might explain why Rick is actually being nice to Jerry and spending timing with him.

Pickle Rick flees from some government agents.

'Rick and Morty'

Things escalate to a serious extent for Pickle Rick, and he’ll have to flee from and fend off what look like Secret Service agents.

Jerry's a damsel in distress.

'Rick and Morty'

Episode 2 is slated to be “Rickmancing the Stone,” a riff on Romancing the Stone, a violent jungle romp romance with multiple damsels in distress. We’re willing to bet that Jerry’s the damsel in “Rickmancing.” So this might be our very next episode.

Rick definitely Iron Mans out this season.

'Rick and Morty'

This shot seals the deal. Note the hole in Rick’s shirt, reminiscent of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. This indicated that it’s the same Rick that’s hanging out with Jerry at some amusement park. Do the cybernetic enhancements mean he’s not even the real Rick, who wouldn’t be caught dead having fun with Jerry?

Pickle Rick emails an explosion.

'Rick and Morty'

The coolest of Pickle Rick’s skills is definitely the ability to email explosions. At this point, is there anything we don’t know about this episode?

Is this the same Radioactive pair fighting regular Rick and Morty from before?

'Rick and Morty'

In the very last clip featured in the trailer, Rick boasts, “It takes more than that to kill Rick and Morty!” Then, right on cue, a handful of Cronenberg-esque swamp monsters move towards them. “But this might do it,” Rick admits, before urging Morty to run. They had probably just wrapped up killing one monster. It’s likely that this relates in some way to the Radioactive versions of Rick and Morty fighting normal versions seen earlier in the trailer.
