In a world full of James Bonds and Ethan Hunts, it’s time to make way for The Gray Man. The new global action movie from the Russo Brothers is making a splash this summer with an all-star cast, over-the-top action sequences, and plenty of intrigue.

Since the movie was announced in 2020, fans have waited for Anthony and Joe Russo’s The Gray Man after the directing duo helmed four Marvel movies, including Avengers: Endgame. Reportedly, Netflix spent over $200 million on the action blockbuster, making it one of their most expensive productions to date.

So, will The Gray Man live up to expectations? We won’t need to wait too long to find out. Here’s everything we know about the Netflix movie’s release date, cast, and plot.

The Gray Man is a Netflix production, but it will be released in theaters a week before its streaming debut, unlike most of the platform's movies. If you can’t wait to see The Gray Man — or prefer to watch it on the biggest screen possible — it will have a limited theatrical release.

What is The Gray Man’s release date?

So, now that you know you have options for watching The Gray Man, when exactly will it be released?

The action caper will arrive in select theaters on July 15, 2022. One week later, on July 22, 2022, The Gray Man will make its streaming premiere on Netflix.

What is The Gray Man’s release time?

Theater showtimes for The Gray Man have yet to be released. However, as is often the case for highly anticipated blockbusters, theaters will have showings beginning the evening before the official release date. If that’s the case for The Gray Man, expect to be able to watch as early as the evening of Thursday, July 14. Otherwise, you will need to wait until July 15 to see Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans face off on the big screen.

If you plan to wait for its Netflix premiere (or want to rewatch it after seeing it in theaters), The Gray Man will release at midnight Pacific (3 a.m. Eastern) on July 22.

Who is in The Gray Man’s cast?

The Gray Man’s main selling point is its ensemble. Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans lead the spy thriller as Sierra Six and Lloyd Hansen, respectively. Familiar faces and newcomers also make up a cast that includes Ana de Armas (Knives Out) as Dani Miranda and Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton) as Carmichael. Here is a list of the main cast:

  • Ryan Gosling
  • Chris Evans
  • Ana de Armas
  • Jessica Henwick
  • Regé-Jean Page
  • Wagner Moura
  • Julia Butters
  • Dhanush
  • Alfre Woodard
  • Billy Bob Thornton

What is The Gray Man’s plot?

Based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 book of the same name, The Gray Man follows a CIA mercenary, Court Gentry aka Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), who unintentionally learns of the agency’s dark secrets. His discovery makes him a target, and there is almost no place in the world he can hide to escape the league of international assassins, including the sinister Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), hunting after him.

It’s unclear how much the film adaptation will be faithful to Greaney’s novel. It seems likely the movie will follow the events in the book close enough to adapt the rest of The Gray Man book series.

Is there a Gray Man trailer?

Yes! Netflix released a trailer for The Gray Man on May 24, 2022. You can watch it in the embed below.

Will there be a Gray Man sequel?

As of writing, Netflix has not confirmed a sequel to The Gray Man. However, when the movie was first announced in 2020, Deadline reported that the streaming giant expects The Gray Man to launch a new franchise based on Mark Greaney’s book series. Greaney has published 11 Gray Man books so far, with another book coming in 2023.

Clearly, there is more than enough source material to sustain a long-running movie franchise. Yet, whether Netflix greenlights a sequel will depend on how the movie performs at the box office and on the streaming service. If, like Red Notice, it breaks a viewership record, it may justify The Gray Man’s costly production and make a sequel worth the time and money.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s wait to see The Gray Man before we try to figure out if he’ll be sent on another high-octane mission or two in the future.

The Gray Man arrives in theaters on July 15. It will be available July 22 on Netflix.
