Avengers: Doomsday is the kind of cinematic experience that warrants a big lead-up, and thanks to Avatar: Fire and Ash, it’s getting one. The next big MCU team-up movie may not premiere until December, but viewers could get a glimpse of one of four trailers detailing just what is ahead for the movie. The first one showed the return of Steve Rogers, now a father. The second showed Thor, who is also enjoying parenthood. But the third trailer finally delivered what fans have been waiting for: the X-Men.

Mutants have been on the outskirts of the MCU for over half a decade now, but it wasn’t until the announcement of the Doomsday cast that fans realized they would be here for good. This is our first glance at what that means. Check out the full teaser below:

Narrated by Magneto (Ian McKellan), who ominously intones that “death comes for us all,” we see what remains of Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, long since abandoned. We then see Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellan) bonding over a game of chess. After that, we cut to Cyclops (James Marsden) doing an optic blast unlike anything we’ve seen before.

It’s not much, but it’s the “canon-est” we’ve seen the X-Men so far. Disney has had the rights to use the characters since 2019, but they’ve just been teased since then: Evan Peters appearing in WandaVision, a variant of Professor X appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast appearing in the post-credits scene of The Marvels, and the weird canon graveyard that was Deadpool & Wolverine. None of these really “counted,” as they were either just Easter eggs or variants from other universes that wouldn’t break through to ours.

Ian McKellan returns as Erik Lehnsherr in the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer.

This may be a teaser, but it’s no tease: these characters are well and truly canon, and will interact with everyone else in Avengers: Doomsday. And it’s not just these X-Men joining: Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit will all also appear.

As exciting as this is, remember it’s just the third of four trailers, and the final one will be just as exciting — and rumors suggest it’ll be about Wakanda and the Fantastic Four.

Avengers: Doomsday premieres in theaters on December 18, 2026.
