Everything you need to know about the Marvel Disney+ shows

The MCU is getting bigger on the streaming platform.

Marvel Studios

Disney+ is finally here, and with it comes as much Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney content you could possibly desire. However, in terms of new original content, the lineup is a little bit sparse outside of The Mandalorian. That will change soon, though. The platform has a murderer’s row of TV shows set to debut over the next few years, many of which will be set in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We won’t see any of them until late 2020, but after that, it’s full steam ahead on expanding the MCU via Disney+.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - Fall 2020

First up is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will debut sometime in fall 2020. The story picks up from the end of Avengers: Endgame and will revolve around Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) grappling with where to go in the wake of Captain America’s retirement.

While few plot details are available, we do know that the show will see the return of a couple familiar faces, namely Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter and Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo, the show’s villain.

It will also feature the MCU debut of US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell. The character has a complicated comics backstory, and we don’t know much about his role in the show just yet. It looks like he’ll be positioned as a sort of government-sanctioned replacement for Captain America.

'WandaVision' won't be what it seems.

WandaVision - Spring 2021

Perhaps the most intriguing of the Disney+ shows, WandaVision will see the return of Paul Bettany to the MCU as the android Vision, who perished in Avengers: Infinity War. He’ll star alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch.

The show looks to parody of classic family sitcoms like I Love Lucy. However, the general consensus is that this will be a front that erodes over time, revealing the true weirdness of the show. (Look to Tom King and Gabriel Walta’s stellar The Vision comic series for an idea of how this one might end up coming together.)

In addition to Bettany, the show will see the return of Kat Dennings (Darcy, Thor: The Dark World) and Randall Park (Jimmy Woo, Ant-Man & The Wasp) to the MCU. It will also mark the debut of Kathryn Hahn, who will play one of Wanda and Vision’s neighbors.

Loki - Spring 2021

Right on the heels of Vision’s resurrection in WandaVision will be the return of another character presumed dead. Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki, the franchise’s original Big Bad — though it’s hard to say whether or not his villainous ways will stick this time.

Made possible by the character’s escape with the Cosmic Cube in Avengers: Endgame during the Time Heist, Loki will be a wild romp that hinges heavily on time travel. It will also feature Rick & Morty Season 4 writer Michael Waldron at the helm. Few details are available beyond this, so keep your eye out for any news regarding the character’s potential involvement in other films or TV shows.

What If…? - Summer 2021

The first animated installment in the MCU will be What If…? which will take on the format of the long-running Marvel Comics anthology series. Each episode will feature an alternate version of a character or story we already know, the most prominent of which will be a world where Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter is given the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers. Other episodes will explore the idea of T’Challa as Star-Lord and a world in which Captain America is a zombie.

While the series will be animated, most of the original cast members will be returning to voice over their respective characters. They’ll be joined by Jeffrey Wright as Uatu, the Watcher.

Hawkeye - Fall 2021

The Avengers’ go-to supporting cast member is finally getting the spotlight all to himself in 2021’s Hawkeye. The series will revolve around Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton mentoring fan-favorite comic character Kate Bishop to prepare her to take over the Hawkeye mantle. It looks to draw heavily from the acclaimed comics run by Matt Fraction and David Aja, as underscored by recent production art that revealed the series will include Lucky, Clint’s dog (a character established through that comic series).

While no casting news has been made official for the role of Kate, Hailee Steinfeld of Bumblebee fame has long been rumored for the part.

She-Hulk - ???

A number of Marvel shows slated for Disney+ don’t have concrete dates yet. The first is She-Hulk, which will likely feature a mix of action and legal drama, as the character has long served as the de-facto lawyer of the Marvel universe. While casting hasn’t been announced yet, Emmy-winner Jessica Gao, who took home the prize for the acclaimed Rick & Morty episode “Pickle Rick,” will be the showrunner.

Moon Knight - ???

This one could give WandaVision a run for its money when it comes to weirdness. Moon Knight will make his MCU debut via Disney+ sometime in the near future. Under showrunner Jeremy Slater, who recently served as showrunner for The Umbrella Academy and The Exorcist on FOX, the cast of the MCU will be meeting Marc Spector, a character who more or less answers the question, “What if Batman were schizophrenic?”

Ms. Marvel - ???

Perhaps the most beloved new character of the last 10 years in Marvel comics, the MCU will finally introduce Kamala Khan. Kamala is a Pakistani-American teen living in New Jersey who idolizes superheroes — right up until she becomes one. Sporting a cool shapeshifting power, she takes up the mantle left behind by Carol Danvers when she became Captain Marvel, one of the brightest beacons in the world of Marvel. No casting or showrunner has been announced, but this will be a can’t-miss show for sure.

The MCU’s transition to television is fully underway on Disney+. It might be a little while before we have a chance to see what it looks like, but the franchise is no longer confined to the big screen. Even with its first team of heroes behind us, the future of the MCU is looking brighter than ever.
