'Star Wars 9' Spoilers: 'Clone Wars' Easter Egg May Reveal a Shocking End

Rey's hand gestures look identical to that of a specific 'Clone Wars' realm.

Though Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be in the capable hands of J.J. Abrams, a scene from The Last Jedi may include a huge Easter egg that could influence the final outcome of the Skywalker Saga. Did Rey’s vision in Episode VIII tease a connection to the spiritual realm of Mortis that could come to fruition in Episode IX?

Confused? Let’s dive in. (But first, be warned, speculative spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker below.)

While everyone has been understandably preoccupied with Rey’s vision in the The Last Jedi — what with the “Dark Rey” comparisons, visions of the future, and what it all means — another fan noticed an Easter egg that hasn’t been discussed enough: the hand gestures Rey makes in the vision look eerily similar to those seen on Mortis in the Clone Wars animated series.

Redditor u/In_eyes_of_munin posted an image comparing the two and the similarities are really creepy. Notice how Rey showcases all three of the gestures and how it seems to come naturally to her.

Before the release of The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson admitted to having watched several episodes of Clone Wars while writing his film, so it’s safe to say that he drew inspiration from the animated series. It’s not the first time the franchise has referenced the series, though. After all, Dark Rey’s lightsaber is a a major callback to Clone Wars too.

But what does that mean for Rey’s arc in The Rise of Skywalker? Well, Mortis is known as being the place the Force passes through and is also a place Anakin Skywalker and several other Jedi has visited before. It remains very mysterious. However, within the realm itself existed the Father, the Son, and the Daughter. See where we’re going with this?

No? Well, the Father, Son, and Daughter are the only intelligent creatures living in Mortis. They represent the two sides of the Force in a way, with the Son being a symbol of destruction while the Daughter represents peace. (The Father attempts to mantain balance between them).

So could Rey be a physical manifestation of one (or even all three) of these creatures? It’s possible that’s what Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was hinting at in her vision. Back in Episode VIII when Rey made those hand movements, she was right in the middle of her Jedi training with Luke. So what better time for the Daughter (or any of Mortis’s inhabitants) to visit her?

What does this mean for The Rise of Skywalker? Maybe nothing, but with all the reports of a “mind-melting” ending, it’s be possible that this movie will feature a live-action version of Mortis when Rey and Kylo Ren (let’s call him The Son) visit the same place Anakin did in The Clone Wars. In that case, maybe it won’t be any of our characters, but some ethereal creatures, that finally bring balance to the Force in Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20, 2019.
