'Santa Clarita Diet' Season 4 Netflix Release Date, Trailer, Cast and More

Another season of the zombie comedy Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix, another finale with a cliffhanger. Fans are left craving more from the series just like its zombies want human flesh, but will there be a Santa Clarita Diet Season 4? And will anyone find out what happens next, especially to Joel?

Read on for everything we know about Santa Clarita Diet Season 4, including a potential release date and plot, and make sure to check back because we will be updating this as we learn more.

What Happened at the End of Santa Clarita Diet Season 3?

The series follows a family that’s as ordinary as they can get — if you ignore the fact that mom (played by Drew Barrymore) is a zombie. Throughout Season 3, Sheila tries to convince her husband Joel to join her as an immortal undead while they deal with various other complications that arise from being a zombie.

In the finale, Joel makes the big decision, acknowledging that it’ll be “weird,” considering all the parts of being undead he doesn’t like, but he doesn’t care because he loves Sheila. However, Sheila’s Mr. Ball Legs (a creepy spider-looking creature she coughed up when she became a zombie in the series premiere) crawls into his ear. Joel then says “mama” in a strange voice and seemingly dies. Sheila quickly bites him, and he comes back, presumably now a zombie.

What happened to Mr. Ball Legs? Is Joel back in control of his own body? Will Sheila’s “cult” of followers continue to grow. We’ll have to wait until Season 4 of Santa Clarita Diet to find out.

Joel made a big decision about his future in 'Santa Clarita Diet' Season 3.

Will There Be a Santa Clarita Diet Season 4?

Netflix has yet to renew or cancel the series. Creator Victor Fresco is ready for either scenario, based on his interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“We’re aware that the show gets more expensive every year; we’re aware of what seems like templates of [Netflix’s] studio stuff is now, it looks like, mostly three-season stuff,” he said.

With that in mind, Fresco added that they “wanted to leave it hopefully satisfying if [they] don’t come back but also promising something that could be really interesting to explore if [they] do.”

That suggests this may be the end for Santa Clarita Diet, though Fresco has plans beyond Season 3.

“I could see a scenario where the fourth year is the last year,” he said. “I sort of imagined it going five years.”

What Is the Santa Clarita Diet Season 4 Release Date?

First, the series has to be renewed. If that happens, it’s possible that Netflix could follow the pattern established with the release of the first three seasons.

Netflix released Season 1 on February 3, 2017, Season 2 on March 23, 2018, and Season 3 on March 29, 2019. Therefore, if there are more episodes, it’s likely that the Santa Clarita Diet Season 4 release date will be at the end of March 2020. So basically, a year from now.

When Will the Santa Clarita Diet Season 4 Trailer Be Released?

If the series is renewed, Netflix could release a teaser announcing the news. There will likely also be a teaser with the Season 4 release date announcement.

However, the full-length Season 3 trailer dropped on March 11, two and a half weeks before the episodes. Netflix will likely do the same if there is a Season 4.

How Many Episodes Will There Be in Santa Clarita Diet Season 4?

Again, first the series has to be renewed. If it is, there will likely be 10 episodes, just like there were in the first three seasons.

What Is the Santa Clarita Diet Season 4 Plot?

If there is a Season 4, the number one mystery it has to address is what’s next for Joel. He’s now a zombie, but what will it mean that Mr. Ball Legs crawled into his ear? Will that have any influence on him moving forward?

With the end of Season 3, the series is “introducing a huge new storyline for season four,” Fresco told THR. “We would love to explore this whole other dynamic now that would just be really interesting in their marriage and what is Joel going to be like.”

Santa Clarita Diet Seasons 1, 2, and 3 are now streaming on Netflix.
