'The Umbrella Academy' Season 2 Release Date Seems Certain for One Reason

If The Umbrella Academy has already become your newest superhero obsession, there may be some good news about its future. Netflix has yet to renew the superhero series, but a new report reveals that the show was certainly successful enough to earn a Season 2 release.

Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 1 below.

The news comes from Parrot Analytics (via Screen Rant), which offers insight into audience demand of television content, and reveals that Umbrella Academy might just be the most popular TV on the planet right now.

The Netflix series “is currently the number one digital original in the United States,” with “demand for [it] over 21 times that of the average title, meaning it’s in the top 0.03 percent of all TV shows,” according to the report.

Given this data, wouldn’t you think that The Umbrella Academy Season 2 release date is guaranteed to happen? Unfortunately, that isn’t necessarily the case.

Popularity didn’t help Daredevil. Deadline reported that the Marvel series “ranked fourth … in viewer demand” the same week that it was canceled. After Season 3 dropped on October 19, it was in the top spot for digital originals that week, according to the Parrot Analytics report released to Media Play News.

However, that was an entirely different situation, as you have to take into account Disney’s soon-to-launch competing streaming service Disney+, which drove a wedge between Netflix and Marvel and effectively killed the superhero franchise those two companies collaborated on.

Nothing could save 'Daredevil' on Netflix.

Netflix

Given that context, Daredevil’s cancelation shouldn’t be a factor when we talk about The Umbrella Academy Season 2. At least not until the comics publisher, Dark Horse, decides to launch its own Netflix competitor, which we’re pretty sure isn’t even a theoretical possibility at the moment.

For a better comparison, we can look to The Haunting of Hill House, which was recently renewed as an anthology with a new title for Season 2: The Haunting of Bly Manor. Season 1 was released on October 12, and for the week ending on October 20, came in second (behind Daredevil) on the list of digital originals, Media Play News reported in October 2018, citing Parrot Analytics data.

That should be good news for The Umbrella Academy and its fans. After all, Season 1 ended with quite the cliffhanger. While the Hargreeves siblings tried to stop the apocalypse, they failed, but Number Five decided to try to fix it (or at least save them) by traveling through time and taking the others with him. If there is a Season 2, it will have to reveal if they are successful, as well as answer other questions, like how Ben died and what happened to all the other Umbrella babies born on the same day as our heroes.

The Umbrella Academy Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
