'On My Block' Season 2: Netflix Release Date, Trailers, Cast, and Spoilers

Who will survive after that major cliffhanger?

The moment we finished binging On My Block Season 1 on Netflix, we immediately needed more. With multiple characters’ lives hanging in the balance, it would have been cruel for the streaming service to cancel the series without a Season 2 to provide some closure. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, and On My Block was renewed pretty quickly. Now we’re just waiting to see the new episodes.

With the finish line finally in sight, here’s everything we know (or think we know) about On My Block Season 2, from the release date and plot to returning cast members and behind-the-scenes production updates.

Warning: Spoilers for On My Block Seasons 1 and 2 below.

What Happened at the End of On My Block Season 1?

On My Block was created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft and stars Diego Tinoco, Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Ronnie Hawk.

In the first season, we met four friends trying to navigate their teenage years, heartbreak, and gang violence in LA’s South Central neighborhood.

Olivia’s quinceañera ends tragically when it becomes the site of gang violence. Though the concern is for Cesar, a member of the Santos gang, it’s Ruby who is shot as he tries to protect Olivia.

However, when the bullet exits his body, it enters hers. Both Ruby and Olivia are left bleeding on the ground as they wait for the ambulance and the season ends. It doesn’t look good for Ruby in particular. That’s where Season 2 will presumably pick up.

When Is the On My Block Season 2 Release Date?

Netflix announced in February that the series would return in March, but we still don’t have a specific release date. Then, on March 7, we got an official release date: March 29. The announcement also featured a brief clip that provides some closure on Season 1’s heart-wrenching cliffhanger.

Before that, the cast announced the start of production of Season 2 in October with a video posted to one of Netflix’s official Twitter accounts.

Then, on November 29, Jessica Marie Garcia posted a video to Twitter with Capri announcing that they’d wrapped filming Season 2.

Based on these updates, we guessed the series would return for Season 2 around March. Now we have confirmation.

When Will a Season 2 Trailer Be Released?

Netflix released the first official trailer for Season 2 on March 7. You can watch it below:

This clip offers a grim look at the cold opening of the Season 2 premiere, beginning with a look at memorials to those who have died in the neighborhood and ending with Ruby in what looks like a casket. However, the last image should instill feelings of hope in fans because Ruby then opens his eyes.

The sneak peek also shows Jamal with the money he found in Season 1 (money that went missing in the ‘80s).

Netflix also released a trailer for the season on March 12, and it begins with Jamal trying to tell his friends he found the RollerWorld money. But having $200,000 in his neighborhood makes him paranoid and desperate for protection. (The poor kid can’t even get a good night’s sleep.)

While it doesn’t reveal any details about what happens immediately following the Season 1 finale shooting, we do see that Ruby is alive. However, Olivia is nowhere to be seen, nor do we hear anything that hints at her fate. We do see Ruby in a suit declaring he won’t live “in fear or with regret.” Hopefully that’s not after a funeral, but it’s possible.

How Many Episodes Will There Be in Season 2?

Like Season 1, there will be 10 episodes, as revealed in an Instagram post from the show’s writers.

What’s the Season 2 Plot?

There are several Season 1 threads that need to be addressed in Season 2.

Despite orders, Cesar wasn’t able to kill Latrelle, who was the one who shot Ruby and Olivia. “He’s going to get disciplined,” Iungerich said when breaking down the finale for TV Guide. “Oscar loves his brother but he can’t let his brother get away with bucking orders.”

As for Ruby and Olivia’s fates, while it didn’t look good for them after they were shot, don’t assume the worst. The new Season 2 sneak peek does a great job of teasing at least one character’s death, as it shows various characters preparing for a funeral. The final image is Ruby’s face, eyes closed, against a white backdrop that looks a lot like a casket. However, at the last moment he opens his eyes. Does that mean Ruby’s alive? We’ll have to wait to find out.

“If we don’t get another season, then I think you know the answer: everyone’s dead,” the creator said in the interview that took place before the Season 2 pickup.

With new episodes coming, the resolution may not be quite that grim. The Season 2 trailer does reveal that Ruby survives, but Olivia is nowhere to be seen, so we’re going to have to wait to see what happened to her.

However, Netflix’s Season 2 synopsis does make it sound like we should start preparing for the worst when it comes to Olivia’s fate.

In the aftermath of tragedy and Jamal’s discovery, the friends lean on each other like never before.

Who Will Return for Season 2?

Ruby and Olivia’s fates were up in the air at the end of Season 1.

Redditor u/moonlight_magic noted the absence of Jason Genao, who plays Ruby, from a Snapchat post.

“Did anyone notice in Diego’s (Cesar) Snapchat he’s with Brett (Jamal) filming and how most of them have been excited for filming but Jason has been kind of MIA,” the fan writes. “Diego showed a snap with Brett saying, ‘On set, Jason if you’re watching this, we miss you bud, hopefully I’ll see you’ and it cuts off.”

While the fan worries that means that Ruby won’t be coming back — he could die from his injuries — redditor u/rhiauuou thinks “they’re under strict rules not to show … whoever survives because that would spoil the whole premiere.”

In other words, it likely meant nothing, given what the Season 2 trailer reveals. However, the On My Block cast could be without one of its Season 1 stars in Season 2, since we don’t know if Olivia survives.

We do know that we’ll be seeing more of Jasmine since Garcia, who was a recurring guest star in Season 1, was promoted to series regular for Season 2, as reported by Deadline in October.

On My Block Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
