iOS 12 Beta Leak Hints at an Even Larger iPhone X Plus

Drip, drip, drip.

For months, questionable dummies and sketchy renders have claimed to give iPhone fans across the internet sneak-peaks of a heralded “iPhone X Plus” smartphone. But a new leak straight from Apple might give us the most legit glimpse of the rumored 6.5-inch OLED handset to date.

That’s according to the iOS developer and 9to5Mac reporter, Guilherme Rambo, who stumbled upon a symbol in the latest iOS 12 developers beta that seems to depict a plus-sized iPhone. This comes only days after Rambo found similar glyphs indicating an upcoming iPad refresh in the same beta software.

The icon depicts a slightly larger, notched iPhone when compared to silhouettes of the iPhone X. That said, he also notes that this image is likely an incomplete, preliminary draft, not an infallible prediction of what Apple has in store come this fall.

The potential iPhone X Plus icon is seen on the left compared to what appears to be a standard iPhone X symbol on the right.

“I’m having deja-vu. Payment glyphs for “iPhone X Plus”, iPhone X (for comparison) and 2018 iPad Pro (which is square and weird),” he writes. “Found in PassKitUIFoundation.”

Rambo also unearthed a bizarre render of what seems to be a square iPad. However, he later tweeted that this could be a boilerplate design that Apple resizes to make the symbols for multiple devices with a single asset.

Reverse engineering newly released Apple products has proven to yield some juicy hints for Rambo in the past. On July 31, he discovered evidence that the iPhone X Plus could also come with dual-SIM capabilities allowing users to seamlessly switch between two mobile carriers.

Leading up to the 2017 release of the iPhone X, Apple also inadvertently released an internal version of HomePod speaker’s firmware that contained silhouettes of the phone ahead of its announcement.

Could this be a repeat of last year’s pre-announcement revelations or simply a random mockup? Numerous rumors suggest Apple will announce two higher-end 6.5 and 5.8-inch OLED handsets and one budget-friendly 6.1-inch LCD model.

Of course, we’ll have to wait until the September iPhone keynote to be sure.
