New iPhone SE 2 Leaks Reveal New Name, Specs, and More

Who's that iPhone?

There has been a tempest of iPhone rumors swirling across the internet lately: everything from what to expect in the iOS 12 update and speculations around the potential iPhone X Plus. But no other product can match the level of hype that surrounds the expected second version of the iPhone SE.

Until now, Apple fanatics have been calling this rumored smartphone the “iPhone SE 2.” But two apparent leaks over the weekend suggested that Apple’s follow-up to the SE might have a familiar name and look a lot like the iPhone X.

Well-known smartphone leaker Evan Blass posted a screenshot on Twitter of what appear to be insider documents that state the smartphone will be named the “iPhone SE (2018).” Blass gained notoriety with his first leak of the Nokia Lumia 820/920 in 2012 and has since pulled the curtains back on various other smartphones, including HTC, Google, and Sony devices.

This possible name reveal came only days before Japanese Apple blog Macotakara published a treasure trove of information it says it gathered at the Japan IT Week Spring 2018 Mobile Expo. The publication claimed that production for the so-called iPhone SE (2018) has not begun and that according to a “Chinese accessory manufacturer,” it will likely come to market late in the third business quarter of this year.

Macotakara claimed it also gleaned that there are three prototypes of the iPhone SE’s successor in existence. These include one with the same case size as the original SE and another with a display as large as 6-inches.

Aside from these clear design differences, the blog said they have two things in common: no Touch ID and a notch, just like the iPhone X. This information supports previously leaked renders of the rumored phone that were published by Olixar and showed the new iPhone with a notch and edge-to-edge screen.

Maybe once Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off on June 4, Apple fans will have some closure. Until then, this speculative storm continues.
