This Mandalorian Armor Might Prove Boba Fett Won't Appear in 'Solo'

Lucasfilm

If we start at the end of Han Solo’s life and work backward, his greatest enemy was probably himself. But if we stick to the classic trilogy, the person who screwed Han over the most was either Lando or Boba Fett. We know Lando is in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but what about that fan favorite bounty hunter? An early set photo from Solo gave fans a glimmer of hope that Fett might appear, but now, a new photo of crime boss Dryden Vos (Paul Benatty) seems to indicate otherwise. Yes, that’s Mandalorian armor behind Vos, but it’s not the kind we associate with Boba Fett.

On Tuesday, Empire Magazine released a slew of new photos from Solo, mostly focused on the big train heist on the planet Vandor. But, one photo the mysterious crime lord Dyrden Voss revealed some familiar Mandalorian armor, with a twist. Though the helmet and style is reminiscent of the same kind of armor worn by Boba Fett, Jango Fett, Sabine Wren, and other Mandalorians in Star Wars, this red number has a samurai aesthetic.

There are two possible conclusions. First, this is 100 percent proof that Boba Fett isn’t in this scene, and therefore, might not be in the movie.

Second, this IS Boba Fett’s armor, it was just different during the time of Solo than it ends up being in the classic Star Wars trilogy. Either way, Solo will have to answer the question of this armor at some point in the movie.

Early Darth Vader concept art

Interestingly, the samurai look for armor in Star Wars has its roots in old concept art from Ralph McQuarrie. Famously, when McQuarrie was pre-visualizing what Star Was could look like, early drawings and paintings of Darth Vader had a much stronger samurai-vibe than what we’re all familiar with in the final design.

And now with Solo, it looks like that vibe has come full circle. But, if we’ll actually discover who wears that armor remains to be seen.
