'Westworld' Cast: A Complete Guide to Who Is and Isn't a Robot Host, So Far

Does this look like anything to you?

HBO

For those who are interested in what Westworld has to say about the depravity of the wealthiest corners of society, be forewarned: this article is only about who is a secret robot. Yep, spoilers ahead for the first season of Westworld.

Though social commentary runs deep on the hit HBO sci-fi drama, the most fun part of Westworld, is guessing who is and isn’t secretly one of the robotic “Hosts.” After it was established that Bernard was a robot in season 1, the door was opened to literally anyone we see on screen possibly being a robot. But at this point, who has been confirmed to be human and who is definitely a robot? And who is definitely maybe a robot? This list is here to help.

Below is a running list of Westworld characters, complete with an explanation of their robot or human status. Plus, we’ve got some crazy theories as to who might be revealed to be human or robot in the upcoming season of the show. Bring yourself back online!

The real Arnold ... or is it Bernard?

HBO

Bernard/Arnold

This one is easy. The biggest twist of the first season was not only that Bernard was really a robot Host, but also, that Dr. Ford built Bernard to match the likeness of Arnold, his first business partner who helped him create the park. Will we see either robot Bernard or human Arnold again in season two? Well, Jeffrey Wright is back, so chances are, we’ll see both versions? More of Arnold could mean more flashbacks or…maybe there’s a third version of this “character.”

Status: Both Robot Host and Human versions confirmed.

Dolores Abernathy

Dolores

We know Dolores is a robot Host in Westworld, but what we don’t know is if she was based on a real person, and if that real person is still alive. The most important detail about Dolores to remember is this: she’s the oldest robot Host in the park, which means she has a lot of suppressed robot memories about stuff that has happened before.

Status: Robot Host.

Maeve and Dolores may share a realization in 'Westworld'

HBO

Maeve

Maeve is definitely a robot Host, but, we also know she was completely based on a real person. She also has extremely powerful maternal instincts, which could have been modeled on a real person? Maybe?

Status: Robot Host. But, a human version could exist too.

Hector and Maeve in 'Westworld'

HBO

Hector

When the Man in Black encounters Hector he considers this robot Host to be a little too “paint by numbers.” But is Hector just a generic desperado? Or could there have been a human Hector, too?

Status: Robot Host.

James Marsden as Teddy and Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores Abernathy

John P. Johnson/HBO

Teddy

This guy is totally a robot host, but if there is a real Teddy, let’s all hope is not the hopeless aww-shucks good guy that cowboy Teddy is. If Teddy was modeled on a real human, maybe it was someone who was way more of a black white than a white hat.

Status: Robot Host. Really Polite One, Too.

Angela Sarafyan as Clementine in 'Westworld'

HBO

Clementine

There’s no way Clementine is human, but there’s something about her relationship with Maeve that makes it seem like she might be something more. Could Clementine have more secrets than we know?

Status: Robot Host.

Young William and Dolores

HBO

Young William

Other than Bernard being a robot, the other big reveal of season 1 was that William and the Man in Black were the same exact person, just at different times in their lives. But, that doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a new robot William in season 2. The return of Jimmi Simpson in the new episodes seems to indicate there will be more flashbacks. But what if it’s a new William? And this time, he’s a robot!

Status: Human. But hey, there could be a young robot Host coming. Maybe?

The Man in Black

HBO

The Man in Black (Old William)

Okay. The Man in Black is just an old version of William and therefore NOT a robot, right? Well…we’re just spitballing here, but what if that’s not totally the case? Would Dr. Ford intentionally create a duplicate of old William as like an agent of chaos in his own little world? Totally. Dr. Ford would totally do something like that. Will it happen? Probably not.

Status: Human.

Shannon Woodward as Elsie Hughes on 'Westworld'

HBO

Elsie

The disappearance and apparent death of Elsie in season 1 has had many fans guessing that she’ll return, alive in season 2. But, if Elsie does come back, does that mean a Host duplicate has been made of her? Or, is it possible Elsie was ALSO a robot all along, kind of like Bernard?

Status: Human. But possibly alive.

Dr. Ford in a flashback.

HBO

Dr. Ford

In the season one finale, Dr. Ford — the co-creator of all the robot Hosts in the park — was seemingly killed. However, we have no way of knowing if Ford created a robot duplicate of himself or not. In season one, Ford created all sorts of simulacrums of people he knew, most notably of his partner, Arnold. So, could Ford return either in the flesh or as a robot? Right now, both options are on the table, though there’s no word that Anthony Hopkins is returning for Season 2.

Status: Human. For now.

Westworld season 2 debuts on HBO on April 22 at 9pm eastern.
