As Han says in the new trailer, “I thought we were in trouble for a second, but it’s fine.” The first length trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story has finally arrived after months of fan speculation. But how does it look? If there’s one word to describe it, it’s “lighthearted,” which might be what the Star Wars franchise needs after the dourness of both Rogue One and The Last Jedi. After all, fans know this Star Wars film probably won’t make them cry anything but tears of nostalgic joy. Famously, everyone lost it when Han Solo and Chewbacca returned in the 2015 trailer for The Force Awakens. Does everyone feel that way now though? Can we accept Alden Ehrenreich as a young Harrison Ford?
On Monday, following the brief 45-second teaser that aired during the Super Bowl, the first full-length trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story debuted on Good Morning America. This trailer is different from the Super Bowl trailer in one big way. It’s not framed by Han Solo talking to a recruiter from the Empire, but instead, seems to flash forward to a point where he was no longer working for the Empire. There’s also just a lot more footage of everything, plus the trailer suggests that the film will center around a heist or “job” put together by Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and will be the reason why Han and Lando meet in the first place.
Though it contained a few of the same scenes from the Super Bowl teaser — including the fact that Han’s old-school backstory of being an Imperial pilot is totally happening — there was a lot more in this trailer. But the big difference was we a lot more of the new Han Solo’s face. We see him racing speeders when he’s young, and paling around with Chewbacca. How he got “kicked out of flight school” in the Empire remains to be seen.
The action and the beats in the trailer feel right, but now, fans are waiting to see if this Star Wars film is anything more than just an outer space romp with some familiar names. And, we’re obviously wondering if even more familiar names will crop up. Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt were nowhere in sight…yet.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is out everywhere on May 25, 2018. It is the first Star Wars movie to come out in May since Revenge of the Sith in 2005. Prior to The Force Awakens beginning the December trend in 2015, the six previous Star Wars films, prior to the Disney take over, were all released in May.
