Who Will Win Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants? A.I. Predicts

Ready or not, it's Nick Foles time.

The Philadelphia Eagles lost star quarterback and most valuable player candidate Carson Wentz for the season last week. They now try to carry on, and at least they face a spiraling New York Giants team to begin. A hive mind of about 30 NFL fans predicts the Eagles will win.

The Giants of old have some experience with this situation. The 1990 team lost signal caller Phil Simms, the MVP of the 1987 Super Bowl, in week 15 with a broken foot. Backup Jeff Hostetler proved competent enough to lead New York to its second Super Bowl victory that season, thanks in part to the most infamous missed field goal in football history. The Eagles have to hope for similar success with Foles, who has previously had some success as Philly’s starter in his previous stint with the team from 2012 to 2014.

To predict the result of this and other games, Unanimous A.I. used what’s known as swarm intelligence to forecast the week’s slate. About 30 NFL fans worked together as a hive mind to make picks. As you can see in the animation below, each participant controlled a little golden magnet and used it to drag the puck toward the answer they thought was the most likely outcome. As the users saw the puck move toward a particular outcome, it triggers a psychological response. They readjust their decision-making, building toward a consensus. Here’s Unanimous A.I. founder Louis Rosenberg explaining swarm intelligence at a recent TEDx Talk.

Unanimous A.I. has made some scarily accurate predictions in the past using swarm intelligence, as our previous article explains. For instance, the swarm went a perfect 7-0 in its most recommended picks for an English Premier League slate earlier this season.

Undeterred by Wentz’s injury, the swarm picks the Eagles to win with high confidence and 93 percent brainpower.

The hive mind likes the Eagles to win by seven to nine points, with 82 percent brainpower behind that pick. The Vegas line has Philly by 7.5 points.

The game kicks off 1 p.m. Eastern Sunday on Fox.
