Here’s Great News for Fans Who Want a ‘Game of Thrones’ Movie

The final season of Game of Thrones will be so epic that each episode will be nearly as long as a movie. Basically, Season 8 will be like an eight-part Game of Thrones movie marathon.

At Con of Thrones, a Game of Thrones convention in Nashville that happened during the weekend of July 2, sound designer Paula Fairfield told the crowd that all six episodes of Season 8 might be feature-length. That would make the last season comparable to a season of Sherlock — only with twice as many episodes.

While Seasons 1 through 6 of Game of Thrones were all ten episodes that ranged from forty minutes to an hour, Season 7 and 8 are breaking the mold. Season 7 will consist of seven episodes, and its finale will be eighty-two minutes long. Season 8 will be even shorter, at six episodes, which is nearly half the length of a “normal” season — but if Fairfield’s words are true, it will actually be the longest season. The Long Night is coming, literally.

Unfortunately, the wait for Season 8 might also be the longest, as showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss don’t know when it will air. But the great war will get a hell of a cinematic finish.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres July 16 on HBO.
