'Top Gun 2' Announced: Can It Top the Volleyball Scene?

The answer is, undoubtedly, "no," so why even bother trying?

Since it’s a day of the week that ends in “day,” we’ve all been treated to another announcement that Hollywood is going to revive a movie franchise from the ‘80s that nobody is especially clamoring for. This time, we’ll be getting a sequel to the 1986 action/military/romance film Top Gun, as star Tom Cruise confirmed the news on Wednesday on an Australian morning news show.

“It’s true,” Cruise said with a grin on Sunrise. “I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. It is definitely happening.”

Top Gun centered around Cruise’s character, Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, and his Radar Intercept Officer Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) as they engage in thrilling, high-octane dogfights with vaguely Soviet fighter jets and, more importantly, some extremely suggestive volleyball.

Seriously, what even is the point of making a new Top Gun if it’s not going to even try to top the iconic sports moment that E! called “the most homoerotic moment in cinema history.” Goose, Maverick’s partner on the court and in the skies, dies at the end of Top Gun (spoilers for a decades-old movie, sorry). Even if Cruise balls again, it just won’t be the same.

Anyway, that’s about all we know about Top Gun 2. The film’s supposedly been in the works for a while, but now it’s official. Back in January of last year, producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with Cruise with the caption “just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.” Val Kilmer has been suggesting that the sequel’s going to happen for even longer. Finally, he’s been vindicated.

There is no release date yet, but here’s a video of that volleyball scene.
