R2-D2 is Pissed Obi-Wan Kenobi Doesn't Remember Him

R2-D2 is a tortured soul and endlessly frustrated with the incompetence of the people around him. When it turns out Obi-Wan Kenobi doesn’t remember ever owning a droid in Star Wars: A New Hope, a new fan video gives R2 the adventurous voice of reason he’s been missing all along — and he’s more than happy to point out Star Wars retcon.

Youtube user Auralnauts teamed up with voice actor Scheiffer Bates to cut together all the R2-D2 footage from Star Wars: A New Hope and put Bates’ voice over R2’s standard beeps and boops. And it ends up being kind of perfect.

“Thank you for trusting me with such an important task, your highness,” R2 says to Princess Leia after she’s delivered the plans to him. “I’ll get this into the right hands.”

As always, C-3P0 and R2 banter back and forth, but, this time, R2 has been given dialogue that fits in perfectly with 3P0’s musings. When 3P0 tells R2 he’s not permitted in the escape pod and that he’ll be deactivated for sure, R2 responds: “Not if I bypass the code, you mindless philosopher.”

“Someone should really look into some kind of electronic mailing system capable of sending large data files from one location to another,” R2 says airily while engineers plug him into the computer on Yavin IV to retrieve the Death Star plans. “Droid delivery is unreliable for so many reasons.”

But the best part of the whole video comes when Obi-Wan says: “I don’t seem to ever remember owning a droid,” one of the ultimate retcon lines in the original trilogy.

“Oh no,” R2 says. “You don’t remember? Wait, you seriously don’t remember me? After everything we’ve been through? The arena on Geonosis? The daring raid on General Grievous’ ship to rescue Chancellor Palpatine? What about the time we first met, when I repaired Queen Amidala’s starcruiser just in time to escape the Trade Federation blockade? None of this rings a bell to you?”

And, of course, Obi-Wan doesn’t remember all the times that he hung out with R2 during the events of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series or any of the times R2 saved his and Anakin’s lives.

The video, while charming and fun, also does an excellent job pointing out the kind of retconning that makes Star Wars, often, so frustrating to anyone trying to keep up with the storyline. Clearly, Obi-Wan had some trouble keeping up with it too.
