'Deadpool' Creator's New Comic Creates "Uber for Superheroes"

Rob Liefeld, Image Comics

Rob Liefeld may have created Deadpool, unleashing a new terror of irreverent humor in the Marvel universe, but fans of the author will be happy to know that his original series Youngblood will be getting a new series later this year. The classic series will once again mix social commentary with superheroes in a brand new update to this classic series.

The new Youngblood series will be written by Chad Bowers (Deadpool Bad Blood) with art by Jim Towe. Focusing on new characters, the upcoming Youngblood series will center around an Uber-like app called “HELP!” where people can request superheroes to save them. When a highly rated hero goes missing, his friends begin a quest to find him. Once again combining superhero stories with contemporary culture, Bowers’ Youngblood looks to tackle our modern, app-based society but with a superhero twist.

“Alan Moore, Robert Kirkman, Keith Giffen and Mark Millar are a few who have left their mark,” said Liefeld about the new Youngblood series, “Chad Bowers and Jim Towe are four issues into their run and are producing stories that will be held as some of, if not the best Youngblood tales ever told.”

Rob Liefeld originally conceived as a new Teen Titans series for DC, Liefeld was forced to abandon the idea when the company refused to put the project together. Instead, Liefeld refashioned the series under the new title, Youngblood, and launched it on the fairly new Image Comics brand. Taking place in a world where superheroes are treated just like celebrities and movie stars, Youngblood introduced a superhero universe that bent to the same rules as our own celebrity culture.

The series continued this trend into Alan Moore’s tenure when Moore centered his series around the high-profile murder trial of a superhero, echoing celebrity crime stories.

Youngblood will launch in May from Image.
