Somebody Needs to Save Baby Groot in New 'Guardians 2' Poster

Marvel Studios

Baby Groot must have some kind of death wish in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. A new Japanese poster released for the Marvel film pretty much confirms Baby Groot has one mission in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel: Blow everything up.

The film’s director, James Gunn, posted the Japanese movie poster on his Facebook page yesterday. The poster shows off an adorable Baby Groot standing atop a mountain of dynamite, holding a lit match. The death-by-dynamite image is probably referencing one of the best moments in the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 trailer when Baby Groot runs off with Rocket Raccoon’s doomsday device, with the intent to set it off and kill everyone on the planet.

That kind of Evel Knievel spirit is what’s made Baby Groot such a popular character leading up to Guardians of the Galaxy 2, becoming somewhat of an obsession for Marvel fans due to Baby Groot’s adorably compact form, while maintaining a gleeful joy for murder.

Baby Groot’s passion for destruction is on clear display in this poster, despite the gag where Baby Groot runs off with the doomsday device only factoring into a single, extended gag in the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 trailers. Clearly, the idea that Baby Groot has some kind of adorable death wish resonates with fans, especially if it means that we get more posters showing off Baby Groot in a variety of wacky situations like the one in this poster.

Interestingly enough, this Baby Groot poster also follows a specific trend in Japanese Marvel movie posters which tend to focus on more ancillary aspects of a Marvel film. Take this Japanese poster for 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, which focuses on the romantic subplot of the film, and makes the movie look like a dramatic romance between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

Ultimately, with so many images of Baby Groot trying to blow himself up, the question we should all be asking is whether or not this isn’t some kind of intergalactic cry for help from the universe’s most adorable sentient tree alien. We’re here for you Baby Groot, if you need us, so don’t blow yourself up.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
