Dan Harmon Responds to 'Rick and Morty' Season 3 Troll Abuse

The 'Rick and Morty' show runners have taken to Twitter to respond to angry, impatient fans.

We’re approaching the end of 2016, and without the promise of a Rick and Morty Season 3 premiere date, angry fans have started pelting showrunners Dan Harmon (Community) and Justin Roiland (Adventure Time) with their demands via Twitter. In response, Harmon yelled at fans, demanding to know how they believe TV shows are made. Meanwhile, Roiland simply bemoaned not being in the loop, sounding a lot like the sad, gentle Morty to Dan Harmon’s angry, witty Rick.

Though Morty has grown into himself after two seasons of following his grandpa Rick around, he did begin Season 1 as a stuttering mess. He pleaded with Rick to let him avoid doing terrible things — shoving giant seeds up his butt for storage, killing alien guards — and begged his grandpa to let him do other terrible things — buying and using a sexbot, keeping the alien spawn that came from that sexbot, and infecting his crush Jessica with a chemical love potion. You can almost hear Morty’s characteristic, “Aw, jeez, Rick,” right before co-creator and voice actor Roiland begins his apologetic tweet.

Obviously, Justin Roiland doesn’t actually want to be harassed on Twitter, just as Morty wouldn’t truly want the burden of being Grandpa Rick. Roiland’s tongue-in-cheek response came a few hours after Dan Harmon’s 2 a.m. take-down of the hundreds of Twitter trolls.

It began with a sarcastic remark that sounds equally likely to come out of the mouth of either Dan Harmon, a real person, or Rick Sanchez, a character Harmon co-created with Roiland.

Okay, come on now, that’s like a canon Rick quote. Harmon reached full Sanchez levels around 2 a.m., yelling at teenage trolls the way everyone’s favorite mad scientist would yell at Morty. Although it must be annoying for Harmon to constantly field dumb questions from whom he calls “dopey teenage poser brownshirt[s]”, it was a joy to see him fire back.

Rick and Morty Season 3, as every fan on the planet knows, does not have a release date set on Adult Swim. Early rumors and statements from the show’s creative team originally hinted at a late 2016 launch, but December is crawling by with no further word.
