Deadpool and a Duck Get Cronenberg'd in 'Deadpool the Duck'

Jacopo Camagni, Marvel Comics

Fusing together Deadpool and Howard the Duck is a classic Odd Couple move. One is a fun-loving psychopath, and the duck is a sarcastic misanthrope. There couldn’t be a more opposite pairing in the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately for the two of them, that combination becomes a reality in a surprisingly fucked up looking fusion that, as Rick and Morty would say, is seriously Cronenberg.

The story follows Deadpool on an assignment for S.H.I.E.L.D. where he’s tasked with tracking down a strange E.T. roaming the U.S. plains. At the same time, Howard the Duck rolls into the same town where the alien is hiding and some kind of The Fly hi-jinks ensues because the two Marvel characters become one terrifying creature that has the murderous tendencies of the Merc with a Mouth, and the cynical intelligence of Howard the Duck.

That sounds fun in concept, the artwork revealed by Marvel indicates that the ordeal will be weird AFfor everyone involved.

While the tone of the comic was originally teased as something light-hearted and fun, the book has turned into a body-horror nightmare as fans come face-to-face with the realization that an immortal mutant becomes one with an intergalactic duck alien. The ramifications of such a combination won’t be fun at all apparently.

What’s interesting is to see this crossover play-up the freaky aspect of the fusion, since so many other Deadpool crossovers simply rely on Deadpool’s humor to carry whatever buddy adventures he goes on.

The previews don’t reveal how exactly the two will become one, but in a surprise move, it looks like Rocket Racoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy will be involved somehow.

Judging by Rocket’s eyes and the little foam coming out of his mouth, it might be safe to assume space rabies come into play somehow.

All-in-all, Deadpool the Duck is shaping up to be a truly bizarre comic that will go above and beyond its humorous pairing concept to deliver a potentially dark, twisted story about bodies merging and alien invasions. Also there will be a cover where you can see Deadpool’s censored junk so there’s also that.
