Woody Allen's Amazon Show With Miley Cyrus Signals Apocalypse

It's as if a weird bot blog aggregator determined the dystopian future of celebrity and streaming television, but it's real.

Not sure how you guys thought this whole “Woody Allen’s career” thing was going to shake out after the sexual assault accusations surrounding the writer/director have come to a head over the past couple of years, but it’s gone a way no human being could have predicted. Deadline reports that the Allen-helmed Amazon series he has been discussing for the past year is actually happening. Its stars? You know, the usual suspects: Elaine May and Miley Cyrus.

After all, the 80-year-old director told NPR last year that there’s still time for him to do his best work! He could still top this baby:

At the Cannes Film Festival last year, Allen made an unexpectedly candid statement about the Amazon project he was working on, stating that “It was a catastrophic mistake. I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m floundering. I expect this to be a cosmic embarrassment‎.” According to reports, it was not his typically dry, self-effacing style, but real weltschmerz.

And maybe this is why: He is starring alongside veteran comedian, director and Tootsie writer May and the former Hannah Montana, last seen in suggestive Instagram posts with Wayne Coyne, trying to out-absurd the VMAs as an institution, and screaming in various places.

Last year’s Irrational Man, as well as his other recent films, have been predictable and boring — essentially, remakes of older work. The best we can hope for from this joke project I wish I was making up is something to break the Allen tedium and freak the world out thoroughly.
