Black Panther is scratching his way into Marvel’s Avengers very soon.

Wakanda’s guardian is set to join the roster later this year with the Marvel’s Avengers: War for Wakanda expansion. This free update will be the biggest one yet for the game as it introduces an explorable Wakanda, new enemies, and new characters like Black Panther and Shuri.

When is the Marvel’s Avengers: War for Wakanda release date?

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers: War for Wakanda will be released on August 17, 2021. It’s a free update for anyone who owns the game, so you don’t have to worry about finding and downloading separate DLC. This keeps up the pace of three to four-month gaps between each new character for the game.

Is there a Marvel’s Avengers: War for Wakanda trailer?

Yes, there is! Square Enix bestowed us with a new trailer for the expansion at E3 2021. Check the trailer out below:

In the trailer, we get a clearer idea of what the War for Wakanda story might hold. Black Panther, who has been in power for some time, must reopen a closed-off Wakanda after Monica and Klaw team up to take the country’s supply of Vibranium. Black Panther is joined by MCU fan favorites like Shuri and the Dora Milaje.

We hear some voice acting from Black Panther himself. He’s portrayed by Christopher Judge, who is best known for being Kratos in 2018’s God of War. The narrator’s identity remains unclear. It sounds like they’re a Wakandian elder as they’ve “seen three Black Panthers fall.”

This update will highlight Wakanda and explain Black Panther’s history with the Avengers in this world. Obviously, Wakanda will be a brand new biome for the game, and a blog post clarifies that it will introduce a new enemy faction and a max Power Level increase.

When will we learn more about Marvel’s Avengers: War for Wakanda?

While some details have been released for the update, Crystal Dynamics has yet to do a massive deep dive into War for Wakanda. That will change soon, though, as Square Enix will hold an Avengers War Table livestream at 1 p.m. Eastern on August 16, 2021. After that, we will know exactly what to expect from the update the next day.

What is the Marvel’s Avengers post-launch roadmap?

Square Enix released a roadmap for the game alongside War for Wakanda’s announcement, and this update will mark the end of what it covers. Marvel’s Avengers needed one for a long time, and the frequency of these updates has left us hopeful for the game’s future. Check out the roadmap below:

The roadmap teased updates like Omega-Level Threat Missions, multiplayer Megahives, better progressions post Level 50, and outfits based on MCU movies, the Cosmic Cube Villain Sector, Wasteland Patrol mode, and more.

After all of these updates, we can finally expect the War for Wakanda update to arrive with Black Panther, new outfits, a Power Level cap increase, new villains in addition to Klaw, the new Klaw Faction of enemies, and a new region and outpost based on Wakanda.

While updates have rolled out slowly, it’s been a relief as a player for the game to follow a clear roadmap. Marvel’s Avengers is in much better shape now than it was at launch, and Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics still appear to be dedicated to supporting it this year.

When is the Marvel’s Avengers Spider-Man release date?

Executive Producer Scott Amos provided an update on Spider-Man in an interview with IGN.

"I can tell you that, formally, officially, people are working on him right now, so it is still in our roadmap for the future,” Amos says. IGN clarifies that all of the roadmap content is just stuff that Crystal Dynamics can commit to release windows for. Don’t expect Spider-Man until after War for Wakanda releases.
