'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' Ticket Sales Release Date: When to Expect It

We hope you like football.

At this point, we’re closing in on the final three-month wait before the Skywalker Saga ends forever with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, so we’re all deeply curious to know when we’ll finally be able to buy a ticket to reserve a seat on opening night. When will The Rise of Skywalker tickets go on sale? What’s the best way to know first? What’s the best method of purchasing them?

As always, to divine when tickets might go on sale, it’s best to examine Disney’s historical record with the previous movies.

With The Force Awakens, advance tickets went on sale October 19, 2015. That fell on a Monday almost exactly two months before the December 18 release date. Two years later with The Last Jedi, tickets went on sale October 9, 2017 — yet another Monday around two months before the December 15 release. In both cases, ticket sales opened up with the release of a final trailer during Monday Night Football on Disney-owned networks ABC and/or EPSN.

Early assumptions make it seem like the third and final Rise of Skywalker trailer will be the most mature look at the film yet, and its release will coincide with ticket sales going live during yet another Monday Night Football game.

If we look at the upcoming Monday Night Football schedule, then the trailer will probably air either during the October 14 Lions vs. Packers game or, even more likely, during the October 21 Patriots vs. Jets matchup. The latter game would be almost exactly two months before the December 20 release date for The Rise of Skywalker, which would follow the trend.

All of this is very different from what Disney did with Avengers: Endgame, an arguably even bigger release. With that film, tickets went on sale less than four weeks prior to release, so it seems more likely that the House of Mouse will edge closer to release rather than further in advance when it comes to the release of a new trailer and launching ticket sales. We all sort of know both will come in October, and by waiting until the 21st, that’ll only drive hype for the movie even more.

Pre-sale demand might not match that of Avengers: Endgame, which broke the internet and caused virtually every digital ticketing service to utilize long queues that infuriated fans. The situation was so haphazard that it was memed into oblivion. Fans have every right to be apprehensive about Rise of Skywalker digital ticket purchases for this very reason.

No matter what happens, however, you should set up alerts with your favorite movie ticketing app and be sure to enable push notifications. You can do that on Fandango, Atom Tickets, AMC Theaters or virtually any other ticketing service you might prefer.

Buying tickets in-person at theater locations nationwide is definitely an option, but given the demand for a film like this and the short notice most people will have before sales go live, it’s best to plan on pre-purchasing a ticketed seat via a mobile phone app or computer to reserve a specific spot. By the time you get to your local theater, the best seats may already be gone. (Inverse reached out to AMC and Fandango for confirmation that tickets will be available to purchase in person as soon as they go on sale online, and we will update this pose if we get a response.)

At the very least, you should plan on at least a pretending football fan for those few weeks in October in the off chance you’ll know for sure ASAP when Star Wars tickets finally go on sale.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on December 20, 2019.
