How 'Captain Marvel' Can Become the Top MCU Movie Ever -- Temporarily

Captain Marvel was released in theaters on March 8, and right out of the gate, it’s been the box office success of 2019 — so far. Not even two weeks later, it may be on track to become the top MCU movie ever, even if it only holds the record for a short while.

In its opening weekend, the Brie Larson-led film made about $153 million domestically and $455 million worldwide. After the second weekend, it’s made more than $266 million domestically and $760 million worldwide. That’s with the film only in theaters for 12 days.

To reach the billion dollar mark, it only has to make about another $240 million. Box Office Mojo predicted that “Captain Marvel’s run would finish around $422 million based on the film’s domestic opening weekend.” If that’s true, that would mean $156 million more domestically, leaving only $84 million internationally to hit the billion dollar mark.

It’s already proven to be a success in international markets, and this past weekend was the opening for Japan, where it earned $5.6 million.

Looking at the Total Grosses for the MCU, Captain Marvel is already ranked 13th, ahead of eight other films in the franchise. Black Panther is at the top of the list. Based on the above numbers, Captain Marvel should continue moving up in the coming weeks.

Reaching the billion dollar mark would assure it of at least the seventh spot on that list for the MCU, but it will likely move further up as well. If it does, in fact, make about $422 million domestically, that would place it behind only Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel’s The Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron in terms of domestic earnings.

However, you have to consider the fact that Captain Marvel is now part of the promotion for Avengers: Endgame, as seen in the latest trailer. That may be enough to get more people to the movies to see Captain Marvel or encourage moviegoers to see it for a second (or third) time ahead of the Avengers: Endgame release on April 26.

In other words, expect to see Captain Marvel’s earnings continue to grow, and don’t be surprised if it comes out as the top MCU movie ever (for now).
