Star Wars Episode 9 Trailer: Footage Solves the Mystery of Rey's Lightsaber

Disney still hasn’t released the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX, but at a special shareholders meeting this week the company revealed new footage from the upcoming movie. Now, thanks to a detailed recap from one attendant, we may finally have confirmation on one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Star Wars: Episode IX: What happened to Rey’s lightsaber?

Warning: Star Wars: Episode IX spoilers ahead.

This recap of what Disney showed in that closed door meeting comes from Scott Ladewig, who attended the event offered a summary of what he saw on Twitter soon afterwards.

After initially describing the footage, one Star Wars replied to ask if Rey’s lightsaber is still blue. In response, another attendant of the shareholders event chimed in to say that it was, which seems to confirm that Rey will repair her lightsaber after it broke in Episode VIII rather than make a new one from scratch in Episode IX.

Beyond that one small, but very exciting, detail, here the meat of what Ladewig saw from Star Wars: Episode IX:

We saw a blockade runner in an abandoned looking hangar. An explosion knocking Stormtroopers in a starship hangar bay. Kylo Ren in a white room looking at the Vader helmet. Rey, Finn, Poe in Falcon cockpit.
Lando briefly. Rey with Chewie’s bowcastet. Finn in some abandoned looking ship interior.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but for long-time fans the most exciting news may be the return of Vader’s iconic helmet, which was in Kylo Ren’s possession in Episode VII but never showed up in Episode VIII. It’s nice to know that we’ll see that helmet at least one more time, though we’re still holding out hope for Darth Vader to also appear as a full-fledged Force ghost in Episode IX.

The return of Lando isn’t a surprise, though we’re still dying to know what he looks like and what exactly he’s doing in this movie, even if it’s just a brief cameo. We’re also excited to see Rey, Finn, and Poe all together in the Millennium Falcon. Oh, and Rey using Chewbacca’s bowcaster sounds dope!

Finally, in another tweet, Ladewig noted that at least one new character appeared, likely the one played by Naomi Ackie, who we assume will be Lando’s daughter:

That’s about it for now, but with Star Wars Celebration just one month away we should be learning a lot more about Episode IX very soon.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
