'Star Wars: Episode 9' Title Reveal: Luke May Have Said it in 'Last Jedi'

The title for Star Wars: Episode IX is still a big mystery, though that hasn’t stopped us from giving it our best guess. But what if the title was staring us right in our face this whole time? What if it’s from an important line of dialogue in the previous Star Wars sequel? It certainly wouldn’t be the first time Disney pulled a similar trick in recent memory.

That’s the crux of a new theory shared by redditor u/wmwortman, who argues that one line in particular spoken by Luke Skywalker to Kylo Ren at the end of The Last Jedi might have revealed the Episode IX title:

Ren: I’m sure you are! The Resistance is dead! The war is over! And when I kill you, I will have killed the last Jedi!
Luke: Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong. The Rebellion is reborn today. The war is just beginning. And I will not be the last Jedi. (Emphasis added)

There are a few reasons this dialogue stands out. First, it’s a callback to a similar line Luke speaks to Rey earlier in the movie, immediately giving it an extra bit of impact. Second, he also says the title of the current film, The Last Jedi in the same line. And third, it’s one of the final things (if not the final thing) Luke ever says (at least while alive).

As for the new title, the words “The Rebellion Is Reborn” certainly fit into the classic Star Wars naming scheme, especially when it comes to previous trilogy enders Return of the Jedi and “Revenge of the Sith. It’s possible the exact word structure could be tweaked slightly — u/wmwortman suggests “The New Rebellion” or “Rebellion Reborn” — but the basic sentiment of this Episode IX* title remains: the Resistance might be reduced to just a few dozen people, but the Rebellion will rise again.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
