'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Mysterio: Watch Jake Gyllenhaal Reveal His Role

We can finally say with absolute 100% certainty what we were already absolutely 100% certain about the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal will play Spider-Man villain Mysterio, which the actor confirmed in his first post on Instagram that slyly pokes fun of his well-known resemblance to previous Spider-Man actor, Tobey Maguire.

On Wednesday, Gyllenhaal released a video of himself reading a surprisingly grade-A copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #311, a David Michelinie/Todd McFarlane issue of Amazing from 1989 that (as the cover states) saw the return of Mysterio. The character debuted in issue #13 in 1964.

“Whoa,” Gyllenhaal says in the video and putting down the comic, “What the f—“

What’s even funnier is Gyllenhaal’s caption: “I just realized I’m not playing Spider-Man.” This is a nod to a widely-accepted truth that Gyllenhaal bears a striking, familial resemblance to Tobey Maguire, who famously played Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s mega successful film trilogy that ran between 2002 and 2007. The two actors even co-starred in the 2009 thriller Brothers where they played two emotionally distant siblings.

The video selfie is also Gyllenhaal’s first post on Instagram. Perhaps it’d be wise to keep tabs on Gyllenhaal’s Instagram page, in case he spoils Spider-Man: Far From Home like a certain other Marvel actor.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 5, 2019.
