'Star Wars' Cassian Andor: New Prequel Series Greenlit for Disney Streaming

Proving there is no continuity or canon Disney isn’t willing to explore, another live-action Star Wars series is officially greenlit, and it’s going to be a prequel to 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that focuses on Cassian Andor. Diego Luna will reprise his role for the new television series.

Oh, and while we’re at it, Disney’s streaming service officially has a name: Disney+ will go live in 2019.

On Thursday, Disney and Lucasfilm announced on StarWars.com an untitled Cassian Andor is in development and will premiere exclusively on Disney’s streaming service, which officially has the name Disney+.

Yes, Disney chose the press release for its own Cassian Andor series to reveal the name of its competing Netflix platform that caused the multi-billion dollar acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Disney says the Cassian Andor series will follow the rebel spy during the early years of the Rebellion, set before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The first in the Star Wars anthology films, Rogue One revealed how the Rebels obtained the blueprints to the Death Star that allowed the good guys to win in 1977’s A New Hope.

StarWars.com confirms the Cassian Andor series will commence next year in 2019 with Luna returning to the role.

“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” Luna said in a statement. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”

The Cassian Andor series is now the second live-action Star Wars TV show in production for Disney+. The other series, The Mandalorian, is currently in production with series showrunner Jon Favreau (director of Iron Man).

There is no release date set for the new Cassian Andor series on Disney+.
