Boba Fett Movie Release Cancelled: But Don't Give Up Hope on Star Wars Yet

Kathleen Kennedy confirms that Boba Fett, the bounty hunter and movie, are both dead.

The cunning bounty hunter Boba Fett was accidentally knocked into the Sarlacc Pit early in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and died, but now it looks like his prequel live-action movie has also fallen into the bowels of Tatooine never to be seen again.

On Thursday night, journalist Erick Weber attended a special screening and reception for Marvel’s Black Panther, but perhaps because Disney owns both Marvel Studios and LucasFilm, President of LucasFilm Kathleen Kennedy was also in attendance. As reported by Weber, the Boba Fett movie is “100% dead” while LucasFilm instead focuses on The Mandalorian live-action TV show focusing on Boba Fett’s spiritual successor in the years after Return of the Jedi.

Despite Fett being a widely beloved Star Wars character that many fans wanted to see get his own solo movie, it now looks like that may never happen. Since June, all Star Wars spin-offs were put on hold after a somewhat disappointing box office return from Solo: A Star Wars Story. This latest news feels like the nail in the coffin.

This is hardly a shakeup or even dire news for Lucasfilm. Star Wars: Episode IX is still in production and aiming for a December 20, 2019 release date. There’s also Rian Johnson’s upcoming trilogy with all-new characters. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, makers of HBO’s Game of Thrones, are slated to helm an undetermined number of Star Wars films too — and that’s just the live-action film projects in development.

The animated Star Wars Resistance series is actively running now on Disney XD, and even Star Wars: The Clone Wars is coming back for more episodes.

Did Boba Fett ever really live up to his potential? RIP.

None of these stories, however, will feature Boba Fett. Will we ever hear from him again? Probably not. But at least we’ll meet the Mandalorian next year and get to relish in Fett’s legacy that way.

The Mandalorian is slated for release in 2019 on Disney’s streaming platform and is already in production.
