'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Is Actually the First of Three Han Solo Movies

If you thought the origin story of Han Solo was going to be a one-off film, think again. Apparently, there will be two more Star Wars films featuring Alden Ehrenreich as the young space smuggler. In an interview published with Esquire on Tuesday, the actor revealed he’s signed up for two more movies after this one.

Buried in Esquire’s fantastic in-depth profile Alden Ehrenreich of written by Alex Pappademas, the actor lets it slip that this isn’t his only outing as the scruffy space pirate known as Han Solo. Though this hasn’t been confirmed, Pappademas’s interview clearly has the actor saying that he is going to do three films in all. Here’s how it reads in the actual article itself: I ask Ehrenreich how many he’s signed up for. “Three,” he says, then flinches, understanding he may have just created a disturbance in the Force. “I don’t know if that’s officially, uh, public. But—yeah.”

Deal with it!

Lucasfilm

For those who are furious about this news and screaming things like “I didn’t ask for this! consider this: if you end up liking Ehrenreich as the young Han, you won’t be complaining. Unlike the self-important, heavy-handed sci-fi fantasy blockbusters that dominate the vast majority of what moviegoers are offered, Solo is poised to be a light-hearted adventure. So, if Ehrenreich and Glover win audiences over as young Han and Lando, no one is going to be complaining if they return for more movies.

In the same profile, Ehrenreich also proved that he took the role super seriously, delving hardcore into Wookieepedia to understand every nuance of the world of Star Wars. He even understands why Han’s pants look they way they do: “I remember doing my audition on the Falcon, putting on the jeans with the Corellian bloodstripe, and thinking ‘Oh, yeah. This is Star Wars. Like, this really is Star Wars now’.”

There is no word from Lucasfilm as to a timeline for when these films will be made or released or if Ehrenreich would be appearing as Han in films that aren’t just focused on his character.

One thing is for sure: if Solo doesn’t answer every single question you have about Han Solo, then there will be a few more movies to resolve everything. Plus, there’s plenty of old source material for Lucasfilm to tackle. Solo is out everywhere on May 25.
