Luke Skywalker Actor Says He Didn’t Mean to Cut Off That Wampa's Arm

Lucasfilm

The far, far away galaxy of Star Wars is a pretty dangerous place — especially for your limbs. Over the course of the movies, there have been more than a dozen amputations, as Jedi and Sith alike slice off arms and legs with brutal, casual ease. One such amputation seems especially cruel, and according to the actor who swung the blade, it was also unintentional. Mark Hamill says he didn’t know Luke Skywalker was going to dismember that wampa on Hoth when he shot the scene.

The revelation that Luke Skywalker detests animal cruelty came on Sunday night when Hamill responded to a tweet celebrating National Cake Day with a baked good meant to look like the wampa’s severed arm.

Hamill was aghast, and revealed that he only thought Luke was going to scare the beast in order to make his escape and avoid being the snow monster’s next meal.

“When filming scene I was assured my lightsaber swipe toward camera (creature not on set) would simply singe fur 2 scare him off,” Hamill wrote. “Horrified to later see amputation & unnecessary cruelty-Wampa was HUNGRY (not EVIL) — Luke would never do this!”

Here’s the thing, though: Since when was Luke Skywalker all about being kind to animals? Remember back in A New Hope, Luke bragged that he “used to used to bull’s-eye womp rats in my T-16 back home.”

What the fuck, my dude? Slaughtering animals at a young age is some budding serial killer bullshit, and now all the sudden you’re all about lightly singing the fur of a flesh-eating yeti? If the wampa was hungry instead of evil, then what sin were the womp rats guilty of as Luke unleashed firey death from above upon the terrified Tatooine fauna?

Anyway, Robot Chicken captured the aftermath of Luke’s brutality nicely in one of its many Star Wars parody episodes. Look at what you did, Mark. Look.
