Iron Fist Will Grow Up in ‘The Defenders,’ Thank Goodness

Netflix

There is a lot to dislike about Marvel’s Iron Fist on Netflix, chief among them its immature protagonist: Danny Rand. As played by Finn Jones (Game of Thrones), the so-called Immortal Weapon who defeated a monstrous dragon to attain his powers comes off mostly as a tool. Danny’s fish-out-of-water schtick upon his return from K’un-Lun wore off real quick. Any time he encountered adversity, Danny behaved like a moody child. Thankfully, it seems Danny will have grown up a bit by the time The Defenders rolls out in August.

The It’s All Connected podcast was at Houston’s Comicpalooza 2017 over the weekend of May 12-14 to record the stars of Marvel’s The Defenders — including Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Jones — the next Netflix series, which is slated to premiere on August 18. When Jones’s character was brought up, the actor said:

“The thing with Danny is that we’re taking an ordinary kid with a lot of issues, and we’re trying to iron those out first before getting to Danny as Iron Fist. And what we’ll [see] in Defenders is Danny coming to terms with being a superhero. In The Defenders, when he first starts, he doesn’t even know what a superhero is, and then he meets those guys and he’s like ‘WHOA. This is cool,’ and by the end of it you kind of see Danny really coming to grips with his responsibility in a much more mature way.”

It’s funny that, according to Jones, Danny doesn’t even know what a superhero is. You’d think that after K’un-Lun, where he obtained a superpower, he’d have heard of things like Inhumans or the Avengers and the Battle of New York, the watershed moment for the world in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But instead of Googling that stuff to catch up on the world, that homeless guy just had him Facebook stalk the Meachums. Man, Iron Fist was weird.
