Will Jonas Be the Villain in 'Sense8' Season 3?

Unpacking the sensate mentor's confusing Season 2 plot line.

Netflix

The second season of The Wachowskis’ sci-fi Netflix show Sense8 upped the conspiracy plot and ended with a killer cliffhanger, as the shadowy organization BPO kidnapped Wolfgang, and the gang declared war. Naturally, this left several loose ends and lingering questions — and the largest is about Jonas, played by Naveen Andrews.

Jonas has always been a mysterious character, acting as a shadowy mentor to the sensates in Season 1. But Season 2 took this further when he seemed to die; then came back to life, and then seemingly switched alliances. As Nomi aptly said in reaction to his sudden reappearance, “I didn’t think I could be any more confused by you — but congratulations, you found a way.”

Spoilers ahead for Sense8 Season 2.

Although the series has yet to be renewed for a third season, Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger. The Wachowskis wrote it banking on a return, so let’s assume there will be one and unpack it.

Season 2 saw the central cluster learning about their genetic makeup as “homo sensorium.” They met other sensates, like the obnoxious Puck and the duplicitous Lila, researched their mother Angelica’s past, and made bold moves in their personal lives. Capheus got into politics; Wolfgang got further into mob drama; Kala decided to finally sleep with Wolfgang and choose a life with him over her husband; Lito openly embraced his sexuality in front of a crowd.

The sinister Biologic Preservation Organization (BPO) also became more threatening, as it took out an agent Will made a connection with and kidnapped Wolfgang. It also seemingly murdered Jonas … only, it didn’t.

In Season 2, Episode 8, Jonas turns up again, much to the sensates’ surprise. “You’re alive,” Nomi exclaims. He gives the ominous response of, “Philosophically arguable, but physically, yes I am.”

As Jonas explains, his lobotomy was halted by the Chairman — the only person in BPO with more power than Whispers. He doesn’t seem that cheerful about this, though. He calls it a “deal with the devil.” Coupled with his comment about how his living state is “philosophically arguable,” this implies that he’s intrenched in extremely bad shit. Could he be forced to hunt his own kind? Could Jonas be like Whispers and turn into the Season 3 villain?

The show certainly seems to be paving the way for a villain arc. “I think both of you can understand that right now I’m doing what I have to do to survive,” he tells Will and Nomi. That sentiment applies to Whispers, who thinks he’s acting for the greater good.

Jonas is not exactly forthcoming after his initial explanation, but the sensates infer that the Chariman doesn’t trust Whispers — even though he needs him for his ‘zombie project,’ which lobotomizes sensates. He, therefore, secretly saved Jonas to act as Whispers’s watch dog.

The sensates put their heads together to figure out what's going on with Jonas.

Jonas is very much alive, but his ties to Whispers and his debt to the Chariman have spiritually changed him. It’s an open question of whether this change is for god or whether a potential third season could pit him as a foe.

Sense8 Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
